Lukoran: Coast, Cultural History and Trails
Accommodation in Lukoran
Lukoran offers several distinct highlights for a trip: the bay and harbor, beaches surrounded by centuries-old pine forest, named natural features, historic buildings and a variety of trails. These themes can help guide your choice of hotel in Lukoran when deciding what to focus on during your trip.
Coast and Landscape
The bay and harbor of Lukoran are sheltered from most winds, except for winds from the western quadrant, the bora, and a stronger jugo or maestral. The beaches of Lukoran are surrounded by centuries-old pine forest. The pond Cezunj is locally known as Plava suza because sunlight reflecting off it turns it sky blue at certain times of day. Above Turkija and Korčulanići is Mount Šćah, the highest peak on the island of Ugljan.
The natural features offer different points of interest: Cezunj is known for an effect of light that depends on sunlight and time of day, while Šćah is the island’s highest elevation. The bay and harbor are described in terms of their shelter from the wind, with the exceptions noted above, while pine forest surrounds the beaches.
Cultural History and Buildings
On Trpinjin Hill is the Trpinjin cultural and historical complex, an estate built using traditional dry-stone architecture. Parts of the estate are more than 2,000 years old and date back to Roman times. In Mali Lukoran, the Baroque summer residence De Ponte has been preserved in its original form. The park behind the residence is associated with a local tradition: the Croatian poet Petar Preradović courted Countess Paola De Ponte there and on that occasion composed the well-known Croatian wake-up song “Zora puca, bit će dana.”
Another tradition concerns the Gothic church and the building below Zmorašnji Lukoran: according to the tradition, both were built by Egyptian monks in the 14th century. The locations help distinguish these historical sites: the complex is on Trpinjin Hill, the residence is in Mali Lukoran, and the church and building are below Zmorašnji Lukoran. Historically, the estate’s Roman-dated parts, a Baroque summer residence and a tradition about construction in the 14th century stand side by side.
Trails and Route Options
The Skriveno blago cycle route is 33.9 kilometers long. It passes the only football stadium on the island of Ugljan and branches off toward Tala Bay in Mali Lukoran. The cultural and historical Staza Lukoran is marked with signposts and hiking trail markers. Martina's Path is unpaved and built entirely using traditional dry-stone techniques with local stone; the oldest sections at the upper end date back to antiquity.
The details highlight different aspects: the length and route of Skriveno blago, the signposts and hiking trail markers on Staza Lukoran, and the surface, materials and age of the upper sections of Martina's Path.
