Velić combines hiking trails with tangible traces of its history. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between two routes: the Izvori Trail is 11 km long and passes through several places, while the Velić–Grab Heritage Trail is 6 km long and features marked stops with historical and archaeological significance. There are also churches in Velić and the Grabske mlinice in the surrounding area. This lets you focus on a longer hike, a shorter heritage trail, or individual cultural sites.

Between springs, villages and mills

The 11 km Izvori hiking trail passes through Velić, Grab, Jabuka and Gaz. It follows the Česma and Smrdelj springs and leads to the mills of Grab. The route thus connects named settlements and springs with a specific mill destination. If you enjoy bringing together different points of interest on a hike, you will find both springs and mills as distinctive stops here.

The Velić–Grab Heritage Trail is 6 km long and connects Velić with Grab. Information boards in Croatian and English are located at 16 marked points. The trail features the historical and archaeological heritage of both places; one of its stops is also Jama Vranjača, a speleological site. It is five kilometres shorter than the Izvori Trail. The trails also differ in their stated focus: the Izvori Trail features springs and mills along the route, while the Velić–Grab Trail focuses on marked points and historical heritage. You can choose according to your preferred distance and interests.

Historic buildings and mills

An early Christian building in Velić has a rectangular floor plan, a semicircular apse and three rooms. The apse is the semicircular end of the building. Together, these features describe its basic form, architectural end and internal layout—three specific ways to explore its architecture.

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, a subsidiary church of Velić, is another chapter in the area’s building history. Its older church was built in the 18th century and abandoned before the newer church was constructed. Work on the newer church began in 1938, and it was completed in 1978. Four decades therefore separate the start of construction from its completion. This chronology distinguishes the older church from the later building phase.

The Grabske mlinice are located nearby. The oldest mills date back to the 17th century, and the mills are protected as cultural heritage. Some are still in operation. As their operational status may change, it is advisable to ask about the current situation before visiting. The mills thus combine the historical context of the oldest structures with the possibility that some are still in use today.
