Podgora – Coast, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Podgora
Podgora combines a long stretch of coastline with maritime leisure activities and historic sites. The beaches extend for approximately 5.5 kilometres along the coast. Plišivac, a lively beach shaded by pine trees, lies north of the town centre. Beyond the shore, there are various ways to plan your trip, from a centuries-old olive oil tradition to trails and cultural attractions.
Coast and Landscape
The approximate length of the beaches describes Podgora’s coastline; Plišivac is a specific beach north of the centre. There are numerous freshwater springs in the wider Podgora area. At the beginning of the 20th century, streams fed by these springs powered 24 mills. This historic connection between water and work adds another dimension to the landscape of Podgora as a coastal town.
Monuments and History
The Galebova krila monument above Gornja Podgora was erected in 1962. It commemorates the Partisan Navy, which was founded in Podgora two decades earlier. The monument was designed by architect Rajko Radović. Its broken, upright wings symbolise sailors who were killed fighting for freedom, as well as the rise to victory. The structure thus connects a specific historical event with its own visual language.
The prehistoric site of Troje gomile offers another way to explore the area’s history. It consists of four burial mounds that also served as observation posts: three are partially preserved, while the fourth was excavated. The remains of the Roščića Tower are also located in Upper Podgora. It was part of a defensive system built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The two sites therefore differ both in their historical periods and in their functions.
