Duboka is located near Čaglin on the slopes of the Krndija. Three main themes shape its character as a destination when choosing a hotel: the mountainous landscape, cycling on the Zelena staza Duboka and nearby Sovsko jezero. These are complemented by archaeological classifications and protected cultural heritage in Duboka.

Nature around Sovsko jezero

Sovsko jezero is a nearby option for a nature excursion. The lake lies near Sovski Dol in the Municipality of Čaglin, has its own water source and was formed by earlier geomorphological processes. Forest and wetland vegetation surround the lake. There are walking paths, viewpoints and an educational trail by the lake; its peaceful surroundings are also part of its character. Here, the focus is on the body of water, vegetation and nature trails—a different emphasis from Duboka’s architectural and archaeological history.

Archaeology and cultural heritage in Duboka

Duboka’s archaeological heritage includes a site classified as Neolithic/Eneolithic and a prehistoric settlement. In addition, two structures are classified as immovable cultural heritage: a house with a raised ground floor, classified as secular heritage, and a bell tower in Duboka, classified as sacred heritage. Thus, prehistoric classifications sit alongside two different architectural classifications.

Cycling and trails

The Zelena staza Duboka runs through varied terrain and offers a cycling experience. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a bike ride. A path also leads to the Svetinja drinking-water spring, about one kilometre downhill from Duboka. The return to the village involves a short but more challenging climb. When planning, therefore, take both the descent and the return journey into account.

Getting to Duboka

The route from Čaglin to Duboka passes through Milanlug along a hilly road beside vineyards. This gives you a specific reference point for your journey without specifying a travel time.

Culture in the wider destination of the Municipality of Čaglin

The Church of St Aloysius Gonzaga (Crkva sv. Alojzija Gonzage) in Čaglin was built as a chapel in 1765, enlarged in 1943 and has been a parish church since 1945. It was completely restored in 2000, taking on its present appearance. The church stands on a rise, dominating the surrounding landscape, and is one of the important cultural-historical and urban landmarks of the Municipality of Čaglin. Its construction history therefore comprises several clearly distinct stages—from the chapel’s construction through its enlargement to its restoration.

In the wider destination of the Municipality of Čaglin, the protected archaeological site of Krčevina-Staro Selo in Čaglin also preserves remains of a Starčevo culture settlement from the Early Neolithic. This site is a separate cultural-historical point of reference alongside the archaeological classifications in Duboka. Another period is represented in the wider destination of the Municipality of Čaglin by the protected archaeological site of Krčevine-Brdo in Čaglin: it preserves remains of Lasinja culture settlements from the Middle Eneolithic, as well as remains of the Licenska culture and Pannonian Incrusted Pottery from the Early Bronze Age.
