Zaton Doli: Bay, Churches and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Zaton Doli
Zaton Doli lies in a bay below the Croatian Adriatic Highway, near the main junction for the Pelješac Peninsula. Oyster and mussel farming, fishing and agriculture are all associated with the village. Churches, historic buildings and archaeological sites add to its maritime and agricultural character. Zaton Doli can therefore be understood in terms of more than just its coastal location: its religious and archaeological landmarks are also among the facets of the village.
Churches and archaeological traces
The heritage of Zaton Doli includes the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Church of All Saints in Mali Voz, the Church of St. Michael in Zamaslina and the Church of St. Simon in Konštari. The place names provide specific reference points within the recorded description of the area, alongside the names of the churches.
Archaeological remains are also associated with Zaton Doli: stone mounds on Resno brdo, a possible prehistoric and early medieval site near Sv. Petar, and a group of 20 stone mounds near Zaglavice. The possible site near Sv. Petar is described as a possibility; the stone mounds at the other two named locations are separate archaeological reference points. Together with the churches, they offer a view of different historical traces without reducing them to a single period.
Historic estates
The area’s listed cultural heritage also includes the Roko-Jerković residential and agricultural complex and the Konjuh House. The Vlajki summer residence is located in Mali Voz and is also among these properties. Churches, residential and agricultural buildings, and a summer residence therefore stand alongside the archaeological sites as different forms of local heritage. This variety offers a concrete starting point if you would like to explore Zaton Doli as a destination not only for its bay, but also for its cultural themes.
The wider destination of Općina Ston
Salt production has continued for many years at the Ston Salt Pans, within the wider destination of Općina Ston. The Mali Ston oyster, which holds a European Union protected designation of origin, is also part of this regional context. Oyster and mussel farming is also one of the activities associated with Zaton Doli; the protected designation of origin applies specifically to the Mali Ston oyster.
The historic urban ensemble of Ston comprises Ston and Mali Ston, the connecting walls, the Mali Ston Bay Nature Reserve, Stonsko Polje and the salt pans. It is on UNESCO’s tentative list; this status is not the same as being inscribed on the World Heritage List. The Ston fortification system is 5.5 kilometres long and includes the walls of Ston and Mali Ston, the Great Wall, 41 towers and six bastions.
The wider destination’s cultural offerings also include the Lapidarium in Ston’s Bishop’s Palace, one of the more significant collections of medieval art in southern Croatia. Stone altar screens, frescoes and ornaments with rich interlace decoration illustrate the artistic work of Ston and the surrounding area from Roman antiquity through later historical periods. This is distinct from the Church of St. Michael on the hill above Stonsko Polje: it lies within the wider destination of Općina Ston and features valuable old frescoes; the Church of St. Michael in Zamaslina is part of the description of Zaton Doli.
Routes and getting around Općina Ston
In the wider destination of Općina Ston, two routes can be distinguished by their length and how you travel. The Napoleon Road leads for 7 kilometres to Ponikve and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. A hiking route to Mount Sveti Ivan starts at Žuljana Beach and climbs towards Vučine Bay; it is 6 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 465 metres. A route suitable for walking or cycling and a hike with a stated elevation gain are thus two distinct options in the regional context.
Bus connections also relate to the wider destination: Ston is connected by bus routes to several cities in Croatia and some cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Check the timetables before your trip. This information relates to Ston and is distinct from the description of Zaton Doli’s location in its bay.
