Signposting on the islands

Zadar County also installed signposting on Pašman in 2019; the islands of Ugljan and Pag and all routes in the “Family & Trekking” category are also mentioned. If you plan to use the signs as a guide on a tour, check their condition on site.

Zadar County as a wider setting

Among the Adriatic counties, Zadar County has the longest coastline, measuring 1,300 kilometres. Its landscape includes a deeply indented coast, numerous islands, fertile plains, karst and mountainous terrain, and abundant water and forest resources. The regional setting therefore extends well beyond the coast.

The protected areas also represent a variety of natural features. Paklenica National Park lies mostly within Zadar County; part of Velebit Nature Park is also located there. Vransko jezero Nature Park is in the county and is an ornithological reserve for 251 bird species. Telašćica Nature Park is on Dugi Otok. Its protected bay is 8 kilometres deep and 2 kilometres wide and is considered the largest bay in the Adriatic.

Hiking trails and outdoor activities

Paklenica National Park has more than 150 kilometres of hiking trails and includes the Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica canyons. It covers more than 95 square kilometres and has extensive, particularly well-preserved pine forests. For a comparison of different natural features, the birdlife of Vransko jezero and the trails and canyons of Paklenica are the main highlights.

Throughout Zadar County, visitors can try rowing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding and similar water sports. Kayaking offers a way to explore the Zadar archipelago and see inhabited islands from a new perspective. In the Zadar area, visitors can also dive among shipwrecks and underwater archaeological sites.

Cultural routes and history

The cultural route “Na ruti liburnskog, rimskog i hrvatskog nasljeđa” connects Zadar, Benkovac, Asseria, Nin and Pag in a shared experience of history, culture and tradition. The “Zadar – Grad utvrda” route leads through the historical layers of the city of Zadar and its significant fortification heritage. Both routes were published on 23 June 2026; their details may be updated by the tourism authorities. Check with them before planning your trip.

Cuisine and crafts on Pag

On Pag, young lamb and hard sheep’s cheese are among the featured specialities. On a food tour, visitors can also learn how to prepare peka. Those interested in cheese-making can get a look at the production gallery, visit the ageing rooms and enjoy a tasting on a guided tour of the Gligora cheese factory in Kolan.

Paška lace is also part of the island’s heritage: it is a centuries-old craft that only a few women still know how to practise. Along a journey through Zadar County—from Ravni Kotari across the coast to the islands—there are also places where visitors can sample olive oil in various shades of green.

Getting there in the regional context

The Zadar region can be reached by land, sea and air, with direct connections to Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik. For your travel dates, check which mode of transport and connection suit your plans.
