Novi Vinodolski: History by the Sea
Accommodation in Novi Vinodolski
Novi Vinodolski lies at the mouth of the Vinodol Valley. Its stone-built old town rises on a hill above the sea inlet and the mouth of the Ričina River. The town brings together historic buildings, coastal communities, an island and wine-making traditions. When planning your trip, consider whether you are most interested in the town’s history, beach activities or regional culture.
Old Town, Castle and Local History
Frankopan Castle stands in the heart of the old town. It was built in the 13th century during the rule of the Dukes of Krk. The Vinodol Statute is also associated with the castle: it was written there in Croatian and Glagolitic script on 6 January 1288. The construction and the writing of the statute therefore both date to the same century, but mark different milestones in the town’s history.
The Novi Vinodolski National Museum and Gallery opened to visitors in 1951. Since 1973, the museum has been housed in Frankopan Castle and the Turnac Tower. Its permanent exhibition includes archaeological, underwater archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, historical and sacred collections, as well as art collections. Individual exhibits may change. The range of themes offers different ways to explore the town’s history and culture.
The churches also give the old town its character. Paths wind through the compact stone houses and narrow lanes to the parish church of St Philip and St James. The well-preserved Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity is also in the old town. On a hill stands the Chapel of the Holy Cross, with views over Novi Vinodolski. As you explore, you can take in a variety of historic architectural styles and views.
Coast, Island and Fishing Tradition
The central Lišanj Beach brings together a variety of activities and facilities by the water, including water and sand sports, tennis courts, a children’s playground, food and drink options, and sun lounger and parasol hire. A diving centre is also part of the beach’s facilities. If you are planning beach activities for your stay, you will find several ways to spend time by the water here.
San Marino lies about 205 metres off the coast of Novi Vinodolski. The island has walking paths and eight benches named after local winds. The Church of St Marin, which dates back to the Gothic period, also stands there. The names of the winds on the benches connect time spent outdoors with a local theme, while the church adds its own historical note.
The Fishermen’s Stories educational trail offers another perspective on the coast. It brings together nature, culture and fishing traditions. Information boards cover local fishing history and the protection of the marine environment. Unlike the collections of the National Museum, the trail focuses particularly on fishing and marine conservation.
Traditions and Wine
Novljanski Mesopust was designated an intangible cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia in 2011. The customs traditionally run from the Thursday three weeks before Ash Wednesday until Ash Wednesday. They include events and dances, as well as specially prepared food and drinks. If this tradition is important to your trip planning, check the dates for the relevant year, as the specific programme may vary.
For wine tastings, Pavlomir Wine House offers a cellar and tasting room in the heart of its vineyard. Tastings include Žlahtina, other wines from the winery, and the sparkling wines 1288 and San Marino. The selection may change, so check the current offering in advance.
