Brseč combines a historic town centre with hikes in the mountain landscape and Klančac Beach. These offer different focal points when deciding how to spend your trip: the lanes and buildings draw attention to the town’s history, while the hike to Sisol calls for careful planning. The coastal stretch offers another option. You can weigh up which appeals to you by considering specific trails, places and buildings.

Historic Town Centre and Architectural History

The historic centre of Brseč stands on a cliff 157 metres above sea level. Narrow lanes and passageways preserve its medieval character; most houses in Brseč date from the 17th century. Šterna, the old village well, is located in the old town’s central square. The Church of St Mary Magdalene dates from the 15th century. A rock beside the church offers a viewpoint over the surrounding area.

Individual buildings also add their own distinctive notes to the town’s history. Mašunerija was built in 1654 by Brseč priest Juraj Mavrović. Eugen Kumičić’s birthplace houses a library and the Eugen K. Gallery. Check access to the birthplace before visiting. There is also a marked walking route in the old town with QR codes. If you plan to follow it, check the markers on site.

Challenging Hike to Sisol

A challenging circular route starts in Brseč, climbs to 835-metre-high Sisol, continues along the Učka ridge via Šikovac, then descends to the ruins of Kožljak Castle. The circular route is listed as 17 kilometres long, with 1,400 metres of elevation gain. Take both figures into account when deciding whether to do the hike: the distance and elevation gain together define its difficulty.

The Brseč–Sisol trail offers views over Kvarner. Near the ridge is the natural opening Provrtenica; Sisol is also part of several hiking circuits. This hike thus brings together a described route, views and geological features.

Klančac and the Route to the Beach

Klančac is another option if you would like to include the coastline in your trip. You can reach the beach by car or on foot through the Brseč valley; the route passes the cemetery. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. Take this into account when choosing how to get there, and check conditions for your planned visit.

A Regional Themed Trail

In the wider destination of Općina Mošćenička Draga, the historical and mythological Trebišća–Perun trail introduces the religious beliefs of the first Slavic settlers in the Kvarner region. It passes through preserved hamlets in the Potoška vala gorge and continues to the 880-metre-high summit of Perun. The gorge above Mošćenička Draga is also associated with these beliefs and the ancient cult of Perun. The trail thus adds its own cultural and historical dimension to the wider destination.
