In Vižinada, historic buildings meet the trails of the former Parenzana railway line. When planning your stay, you can focus on churches and history, hiking and cycling, or Istrian specialties. The visitor centre, sacred art and various routes offer different ways to explore the area.

Historic buildings and sacred art

Kuća Maraston dates from the transition between the 16th and 17th centuries and serves as a visitor centre. Multimedia displays there present the history of Vižinada. Fontik, also known as Kuća „Lav“, is the oldest surviving public secular building in the town and was built in the 15th century. A 1726 tariff board preserved there regulated duties on trade and shipping on the Mirna.

The Church of St. Barnabas is Istria’s largest church with two apses and was built in the Romanesque period, in the 12th or 13th century. Its frescoes depict the life of Christ from the Nativity to the Resurrection, as well as a scene of the Last Judgment. During restoration, around 30 Glagolitic and Latin graffiti were discovered, recording the names and details of former residents. The single-nave Neoclassical Church of St. Jerome, built between 1837 and 1840, stands in the main square.

The cistern of Vižinada also tells the story of the town’s architectural history: it was built in 1782 to a design by Istrian architect Simeone Battistelle and decorated with Baroque ironwork by local blacksmiths. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary on Božje Polje. It was built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier religious building and monastery. The figures in the sanctuary are among the largest in Istrian fresco painting.

Hiking trails and Parenzana routes

The Parenzana is a reconstructed sports and leisure route along the former railway line through Istria; parts of the old line have been converted into cycling and hiking trails. The Istrian section passes through valleys, green hills, vineyards and olive groves, with views of medieval towns. The route thus combines scenic landscapes with the history of the railway line.

The Trail of Scenic Views starts at the southern entrance to Vižinada, beside the 13th-century Church of St. John the Baptist. It leads to a life-size model of the U20 locomotive that once ran on the Parenzana. Its highest point is 353 metres above sea level, with views across the hills on both sides of the Mirna. The trail also includes the Sabadin or St. Vital Viaduct, which is 64 metres long and 20 metres high.
