Discover Kloštar: Forest, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Kloštar
Kloštar combines a rural village character with natural and cultural heritage. When looking for hotels for a trip to Kloštar, you can first consider whether architecture, Kontija Forest, cycling and walking routes, or the history of the abbey will shape your stay.
Village character and western Istrian architecture
Kloštar displays traditional architectural features of western Istria. A large village pond and several preserved rural building complexes add to this village character. These features create different focal points: the pond is a defining landscape feature, while the building groups reflect the traditional character of western Istrian architecture. For those interested in rural architecture, the focus is not just on individual buildings but also on the historic building groups.
Kontija Forest and trails
Kontija Forest covers 65 hectares between Kloštar, Gradina and Flengi. Its natural landscape includes a stand of hornbeams more than 140 years old. The forest has designated walking and cycling trails. This allows you to include both the old trees and walking or cycling as separate interests in your travel plans.
The Na pustinjakovoj stazi, designated as a family cycling route, passes through Kloštar and also includes the Abbey of St Michael. The route is 9.5 kilometres long and has 149 metres of elevation gain. Of the total distance, 7.5 kilometres are on gravel roads and 2 kilometres on asphalt. This gives a clearer picture of the surface than the overall distance alone: gravel makes up the larger share.
Abbey, hillfort and path to Lim
Kloštar is associated with the remains of the Benedictine Abbey of St Michael above Lim. The abbey was founded in the early 11th century. The surviving complex includes parts of the cloister, two churches, Romanesque frescoes and a cistern. Local tradition links its foundation to St Romuald. The prehistoric hillfort of Mukaba is also among the area's historical points of interest; defensive remains built using dry-stone construction can be seen there.
Fratarske škale is a 530-metre walking path from the abbey area to the sea at Lim. The path has 115 metres of elevation gain. Compared with the 9.5-kilometre cycling route, it is much shorter; the elevation figure is a separate measurement that you can take into account when planning.
