Gradina brings together traces of prehistoric settlement, church art, and the natural area of the Kontija Forest. The history of the village spans from the former hilltop settlement to specific altar paintings and a chapel with a recorded date. At the same time, the forest offers its own setting for hiking and cycling tours. Cultural history and landscape thus provide distinct themes for your trip.

Settlement History and Church Art

In front of the parish church of Saint Andrew, a leveled plateau marks the former center of the prehistoric hilltop settlement. The former settlement layout and the church’s artistic and architectural details offer distinct historical points of reference: here, the focus is on a former center in the landscape, while altars and chapel architecture shape the description there.

In the parish church, an oil painting of Blessed Miroslav Bulešić is located at the right-hand altar; his relics are set into the main altar. The main altar painting depicts Saint Andrew together with the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child, as well as Saints Romuald and Sophia. Thus, both Bulešić and other depictions of saints are present in the same place, with the painting and relics at different altars.

The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Gradina cemetery was built in 1746 and restored in 1881. This single-nave building has an altar, two small side windows, and a bell gable. “Single-nave” describes a building with one nave; the term refers to its basic form, while the altar, windows, and bell gable are other specific architectural features. The dates distinguish the construction from the later restoration. Compared with the prehistoric plateau, the chapel can thus be situated within a clearly dated building history.

Kontija Forest and Outdoor Activities

The Kontija Forest covers 65 hectares and lies between Kloštar, Gradina, and Flengi. It contains a particularly well-preserved stand of white hornbeam vegetation that is more than 140 years old. This age and the plant species give the forest a specific natural feature; at the same time, the area extends across the named places, providing a regional context.

The forest has well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, as well as picnic areas. This offers different options to consider: you can explore the area on foot or by bike, or use the picnic areas as a separate point of reference when planning. The trails and the old white hornbeam stands describe different aspects of the forest—how it is used and its distinctive landscape character.

Planning Your Trip

Gradina lies at the junction of local roads from Poreč, Sveti Lovreč Pazenatički, and Kloštar. This adds a specific regional reference point to the cultural and landscape themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Gradina, you can start by weighing your interests: the prehistoric settlement layout and church art are distinct from the natural area with its hiking and cycling trails. This makes it possible to view Gradina as a destination according to the themes that matter most to you.
