Grobnik and the Church of St. Michael

Grobnik, also called Gromnik, is a small village in east-central Istria. The Church of St. Michael stands in the local cemetery, slightly above the village. A church stood on this site as early as the 13th century; the Church of St. Michael is mentioned in the 15th century. Its present form dates from the 17th century. The dates therefore distinguish the earlier church site from the later form of the present building.

Grobnik was one of six chaplaincies in the former Diocese of Pićan. This links the village’s building history with its former ecclesiastical role. The Chapel of St. Michael in Grobnik is part of the sacred cultural heritage of the Pićan area. A report from 2005 describes the complete restoration of the church’s exterior. This included the roof, porch, walls, windows, doors, and drainage channel.

The St. Roch Way 702 is an educational trail in the Pićan region. The trail begins in Pićan and has twelve information points. The route runs through the forest to the spring of St. Nicephorus and Sopot Waterfall. The waterfall is 24.5 metres high, with a turquoise lake at its foot. In the Pićan region, the waterfall is part of an ecologically significant area. Route details may change, and conditions at the waterfall vary by season. Pićan and the Municipality of Pićan

The Municipality of Pićan is in central Istria, in the Labinština area. It covers 51 square kilometres and is surrounded by fields and vineyards. The historic town of Pićan is the municipal seat and lies on a prominent limestone hill west of Čepićko polje.

Buildings in historic Pićan tell stories of different eras. The monumental town gate dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1613 for Bishop Antonio Zara. The white limestone bell tower was built in 1872 and is 48 metres high. At its foot, a historic stone measure used to measure the dues of the subjects has been preserved. The parish Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary acquired its present exterior form through a renovation in 1753; its interior was given a Baroque style under Bishop Piccardia.

Pićan’s viewpoints include Franz Ferdinand, from where the rolling landscape of central Istria can be seen. The St. Helena viewpoint is at the other end of the historic settlement and is named after a church that once stood there. At the natural viewpoint by the Church of St. Michael in Pićan, the stone sculpture “The Family,” created by Nane Zavagno in 1999, complements the site. A small passage leads into the gardens; from there, you can see the best-preserved section of the town walls.

PetiVina takes place in Pićan on the first weekend in June and brings together winemakers, wine lovers, local products, and homemade crafts. Before travelling, check the specific date and programme for that year’s event, as both may change.
