The Municipality of Pićan is located in central Istria, in the Labinština area. The municipality covers 51 square kilometers and is surrounded by fields and vineyards. Its historic main settlement, Pićan, the seat of the municipality, lies on a prominent limestone hill west of Čepićko polje. The area brings together the settlement’s architectural history and a landscape of viewpoints and waterfalls.

Landscape and viewpoints

The Franz Ferdinand viewpoint offers a view of the hilly landscape of central Istria. At the other end of the historic settlement is the St. Helena viewpoint. Its name recalls a church that once stood there. The two viewpoints are therefore located in different parts of Pićan and offer distinct landmarks for a walk around the town.

North of the center, on a neighboring hill, stands the single-nave Romanesque Church of St. Michael, dating from the 13th century. At the natural viewpoint by the church, the stone sculpture “The Family” by Nane Zavagno, created in 1999, adds to the setting. A protected landscape of 570 hectares with unusual geological features also stretches between Gračišće and Pićan.

Buildings and traces of the town’s history

Historic Pićan is home to buildings from several centuries. The monumental town gate dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1613 for Bishop Antonio Zara. In the park in front of the entrance to Pićan stands a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, erected in 1714. The Parish Church of the Annunciation took on its present exterior form through a renovation in 1753; its interior was given a Baroque makeover under Bishop Piccardia.

The white limestone tower also tells the story of the town’s architecture: it was built in 1872 and is 48 meters high. At the foot of the bell tower is a historic stone measure that was used to measure the dues of the subjects. A small passage leads into the gardens; from there, you can see the best-preserved section of Pićan’s town walls.

The Church of St. Roch was founded during a major plague epidemic, and Bishop Gašpar Bobek laid its foundation stone. Together with the Church of the Annunciation, it shows how different phases of the town’s history can be read in its religious buildings.

Culture and local traditions

Opposite the parish church stands the birthplace of Matko Brajša Rašan. In 1912, he composed Istria’s current official anthem, “Krasna zemljo,” to lyrics by Ivan Cukon. For those interested in regional cultural history, it offers a tangible link between a place in the center of Pićan and Istria’s musical tradition.

CENKI – the Center for the Intangible Culture of Istria of the Ethnographic Museum of Istria – was founded in Pićan in 2011. It is dedicated to researching, documenting, preserving, and sharing Istria’s intangible culture. This includes examining how knowledge and practices continue in rural and urban settings.

At PetiVina, winemakers and wine lovers gather in Pićan on the first weekend of June. Local products and homemade handicrafts are also part of the festival. Dates and program details may change, so check the information for your intended event date before your trip.

The Way of St. Roch and waterfalls

The Way of St. Roch 702 starts in Pićan and leads through the forest to the spring of St. Nicephorus. It also leads to Sopot Waterfall, which is 24.5 meters high; a turquoise lake lies at its foot. Conditions at the waterfall vary seasonally, so it’s best to check the current situation when planning a visit.

Nearby, at Most Pićan, is Benkovski Waterfall. It is about 40 meters high and has water mainly in autumn, winter, and spring; it dries up in summer. This pattern is a specific seasonal difference to keep in mind: water flow at Benkovski Waterfall is described for those seasons, while conditions at Sopot Waterfall generally vary by season.

If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in the Municipality of Pićan, your travel interests can help narrow your search: historic buildings and culture in town, or viewpoints, protected landscapes, and paths to waterfalls. Information about PetiVina and seasonal conditions at the waterfalls is particularly useful if you’re planning your trip around a specific time of year.
