Novigrad Municipality is located in the Zadar region of Croatia. The Novigrad Sea, the coast and historic buildings offer different points of interest to help you plan your trip. It is worth distinguishing between the individual places and bodies of water: Novigrad Beach, the Novigrad Sea and the Karin Sea each have their own characteristics. When looking for a hotel, you can choose your focus based on whether you are mainly interested in water activities, culture in Novigrad or other aspects of nature.

Water, Coast and Activities

The Velebit Mountains provide a backdrop to Novigrad Beach. Visitors can follow an underwater trail there and observe marine life. As infrastructure may be subject to seasonal conditions or maintenance, it is advisable to check its current status before visiting. Seasonal water activities at the beach include pedal boating and rowing. Stand-up paddleboarding is also possible on the Novigrad Sea, where SUP boards can be rented. Check availability in advance if you plan to include this activity in your itinerary.

There are cycling routes around Novigrad. As their availability and conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out. The Karin Sea is connected to the Novigrad Sea by a narrow channel and is no more than twelve metres deep. The Zrmanja, Karišnica and Bijela rivers flow into the Karin Sea; their inflow makes its water less salty than that of other Dalmatian beaches. The Karin Sea is also warmer than the Adriatic.

Churches, History and Places to Visit

The early Christian Church of St Martin lies in the fields beside the road from Novigrad towards Pridraga. It dates from the 5th or 6th century, has a single nave and three apses. Remains of a baptistery from the same period stand beside the church. The Church of St Kate is considered the oldest church in Novigrad. Butko Kuriaković commissioned its construction in 1393. The Church of St Nicholas dates from 1800 and stands at the entrance to the harbour. Fortica rises on a hill above Novigrad.

Language is also part of the area’s cultural identity: the Novigrad dialect is included on Croatia’s list of intangible cultural heritage. The town’s visitor attractions also include a fishing museum. If you would like to include it in your itinerary, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Mussels, Festivals and Regional Produce

The Zrmanja flows into the Novigrad Sea. Its inflow reduces the salinity and supports mussel farming. A municipal mussel project links Novigrad mussels with the preserved seabed habitat of the Novigrad Sea. The annual event Okusi Novigradske dagnje celebrates Dalmatian tradition, culture and gastronomy. Ribarske večeri focuses on fresh fish, local olive oil and Novigrad mussels; the food on offer may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates and current programme in advance. Produce is also grown and livestock raised in Pridraga.

More Nature and Getting Around

The Zrmanja Canyon is protected as a significant landscape. It can be explored from Pridraga; the distance is given as approximately 2.8 kilometres and may vary depending on the route. Visitors can take boat trips, kayak and canoe excursions, and rafting trips on the Zrmanja River, with views of the canyon. Availability of individual excursions may change, so it is advisable to check before making plans.
