Martinčići
Accommodation in Martinčići
Martinčići can be understood through three specific themes: the settlement on the hilltop, cycling routes through the village, and the associated Natura 2000 site. Parenzana and the Church of St. Florijan add route and historical context to this overview.
Hilltop village and Natura 2000
Martinčići is considered a picturesque settlement on a hilltop. Old and newer buildings stand side by side; traditional farmsteads evoke earlier times. This mix defines the village’s rural character and gives the settlement several visible layers of history.
The Natura 2000 site Istra - Martinčići, associated with Martinčići, covers 23.99 hectares. Meadows and arable land lie at the foot of wooded hills and shape its landscape. The site’s conservation objective is the Adriatic lizard orchid (Himantoglossum adriaticum). The combination of open areas and wooded hills adds a distinctive feature alongside the built-up village. The 23.99 hectares indicate the size of the site; meadows, fields, and wooded hills shape its landscape, while the Adriatic lizard orchid, as a conservation objective, provides a distinct aspect for understanding the site.
Cycling: route and course
For cyclists, the Istria-Bike Route 4 can be assessed by tour duration and surface type. It passes through Martinčići and is titled “Oprtalj and Authentic Flavours of Rural Istria”. The route is described as taking 4:00 to 4:30 hours, and includes 38.1 kilometres of asphalt and 1.2 kilometres of gravel. Travel time and surface breakdown offer different points of reference for planning the ride. Technical route data may be revised by the operator, so check these figures again before setting off.
A road-cycling route in northwestern Istria also passes through Martinčići, between Oprtalj and Grožnjan. It follows one of the region’s least-travelled roads. The final approach to Grožnjan includes sections with gradients of more than 12 percent. The routes therefore raise different considerations: for Route 4, duration and surface are clear reference points, while the steep approach to Grožnjan is a key feature of the road-cycling route.
Parenzana and refreshments
Martinčići is a refreshment stop on the Grožnjan–Livade section of the Parenzana. Konoba Tre volti is also one of the refreshment stops on this stage and is located at Grožnjan, Klija 19, Martinčići. Tre volti offers parking. Restaurant details may change, so check them before your visit.
Church and local tradition
The Church of St. Florijan lies between Martinčići and Kave. It dates from the late Romanesque period of the 14th century. A local report from 2021 recounts that residents of Martinčići and surrounding settlements gather at the church every year for a Mass dedicated to the saint.
