Groznjan combines urban history, architecture and culture with trails and events. If you are planning a hotel stay with an interest in history, architecture or events, these themes can help you choose your destination. It is worth distinguishing between sights in the town, trails in the municipality and events tied to specific seasons.

Urban history and architecture

The town loggia dates from the late 16th century, formerly served as a courthouse and contains four Roman tombstones. Its construction and the tombstones point to different historical periods; its former use as a courthouse adds the history of municipal administration to this picture. Historically, the castle housed the seats of the town mayors and the captains of Pazin. The castle has been restored four times. The town walls formed a unified defensive complex and, at the same time, an architectural whole.

Churches and archaeological traces offer further ways to explore the past. The Chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damian stands outside the town walls and dates from 1554. The parish church of St Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia houses Girardi organs dating from 1846. Archaeological finds include Roman remains and also point to earlier settlement in the Neolithic period. The Fonticus Town Gallery houses a heraldic collection focusing on Istrian coats of arms, alongside examples from Croatia, Germany and Slovenia. From the viewpoint at the site of the former small gate, the view extends over around twenty villages in central Istria.

Trails and contrasting landscapes

A local hiking trail starts at a car park outside Groznjan, approaches the town walls and reaches the former Parenzana railway line. The Parenzana route near Groznjan heads towards the Kalcini Tunnel, where the tunnel crosses the highest point of the route, at 293 metres above sea level. Check trail conditions before setting out.

At the municipal level, the Sacred Heritage Trails of Groznjan form a circular route for walking or cycling that passes settlements and churches in the municipality. The routes offer different perspectives: the local hiking trail focuses on the town walls and the former railway line, while the circular route across the municipality focuses on settlements and churches. This can help you decide when planning whether you are more interested in trails around the town or a circuit through the municipality; check current trail conditions before each outing.
