Accommodation in Gologorica
Gologorica is situated on a Flysch ridge above the fertile valley in the Raša River basin. The landscape and built heritage shape the village in different ways: marl and deep gorges form the surrounding terrain, while historic buildings and written records span several centuries. These two perspectives help place Gologorica as a travel destination.
Flysch, marl, and river basin
The Flysch ridge and the fertile valley define the wider setting. Deep gorges cut through the marl formations around Gologorica. The village’s position above the river basin sits alongside terrain shaped by ravines. The marl layers are remnants of the muddy bed of a shallow sea that covered the area around 50 million years ago. The landscape therefore points to a much earlier geological history than the historic buildings in the village.
The Piskovica Cave, which is 1,036 metres long, is located near Gologorica. Together with the marl formations, it is one of the area’s geological landmarks.
Gate, lane, and historic buildings
Gologorica was first mentioned in 1102. The entrance leads through Vela vrata, regarded as the former main gate. A short lane leads from there to the square by the De Franceschi house, built in 1711. The gate, lane, and square form a spatial sequence; the years 1102 and 1711 mark different historical reference points for the village.
Churches and written records
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands at the entrance to Gologorica. The Romanesque building was decorated with Gothic frescoes around 1400. The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in the 17th century on the site of an older church. Gothic reliefs survive from this earlier building: they depict the Crucifixion and the Burial of Jesus and are dated 1466. The Church of All Saints in the cemetery bears a Glagolitic inscription from 1549.
The dates therefore relate to different buildings and features: the frescoes from around 1400, the reliefs dated 1466, the inscription from 1549, and the church built in the 17th century. The Istarski razvod is also regarded as the oldest legal and travel text written in Glagolitic script.
Tradition and getting there
The traditional donkey race “Trka s tovari” was revived in Gologorica in 2009 after a 17-year hiatus. The race adds another aspect of local tradition to the village’s church and written history. Gologorica can be reached by road from Cerovlje and Paz through the valley of the Rakov potok; these places and the valley provide practical orientation for the journey.
Regional context
In the wider destination of Općina Cerovlje, Cerovlje is the central settlement of an extensive municipality. It stretches northeast of Pazin across hilly terrain. This regional context complements the picture of Gologorica, whose defining themes here are the Flysch ridge, marl gorges, and historic buildings and written records.
