Draguc: Frescoes, Churches and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Draguc
Draguć combines historic architecture with a strong focus on sacred art. Churches, frescoes and inscriptions shape the town’s cultural heritage; Venetian fortifications and views of Lake Butoniga add to its character. Keep in mind that access varies from place to place: the House of Frescoes is closed and opens by prior arrangement.
Frescoes and Inscriptions in Draguć
The Church of St. Roch is a protected immovable cultural property and part of Draguć’s historic ensemble. Its fresco cycle comprises 28 scenes from the life of Christ, depictions of Old Testament prophets and local patron saints. The frescoes are by Anthony of Padua. Glagolitic inscriptions refer to the patrons, the painter, the year of construction and historical experiences in Draguć. Together, the imagery and written records offer different insights into the church’s artistic and local history.
At the entrance to Draguć stands the Chapel of St. Eliseus, dating from the late 12th century. Dark and light sandstone courses alternate in regular horizontal rows on its exterior wall; the design is a miniature expression of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. A fresco depicting a chivalric battle has been preserved inside the chapel. It is the only figurative scene of its kind in Istria.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The 15th-century parish church stands in the town square. Another clearly dated building is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in 1641 on the site of an older church. It preserves altarpieces and five well-preserved wooden altars that were once used in churches in Draguć. Together with the Venetian fortifications, these buildings showcase different aspects of the town’s historic character.
House of Frescoes and Visit Planning
The House of Frescoes is located in the old school on the main street. As an experience centre, it uses multimedia interactions to present Istria’s cultural heritage. The ground floor houses a tourist information point and a small gallery. The house is closed and opens by prior arrangement, so plan a visit only after making arrangements. The key to St. Rocco is kept at the House of Frescoes. Check current access arrangements before your visit, as they may change.
Location and an Annual Music Event
Draguć is 17 kilometres from Pazin, on the Cerovlje–Buzet road and above Butoniga. The town offers views of Lake Butoniga. The landscape and buildings provide different ways to shape a stay, without needing to focus on the same things during your visit.
Every year on the third Sunday in June, Draguć hosts “Z bajson u Draguć,” a gathering of Bajs musicians. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check that year’s programme.
