Karigador: Fishing Heritage and Coastal Life
Accommodation in Karigador
Karigador brings together fishing culture, maritime history, cycling routes and beach activities. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: Would you like to learn about local fishing practices and maritime heritage, cycle through Karigador or spend time at the beach? These highlights belong to different aspects of the town and can be prioritised according to your interests.
Fishing and Maritime Heritage
A theme park and a themed trail in Karigador introduce visitors to local fishing practices. The theme park is divided into four themed areas and introduces visitors to fishing and maritime heritage. The theme “Baština uronjena u more” (Heritage Immersed in the Sea) illustrates the millennia-old relationship between people and the sea through archaeological remains. These include a bronze hook and an ancient breakwater. These examples show the different kinds of evidence through which the theme draws attention to the long-standing relationship between people and the sea. If you plan to visit the theme park, it is advisable to check the current opening hours in advance.
Harbour History and Church
Karigador’s history links its former harbour with the loading of oak logs for the Venetian Arsenal. Another point of reference in time is the Church of Our Lady of Grace: dating from 1912, it adds a building from the early 20th century to the picture of the town’s history.
Waterfront, Nature and Beach
Karigador’s waterfront promenade offers a maritime atmosphere within the Brtonigla destination. The “Luka bioraznolikosti” (Biodiversity Harbour) area presents Karigador as an important habitat for fish and birds. This brings together the town’s maritime character and a perspective on nature and wildlife as distinct themes. Karigador-Molo is one of three beaches in the coastal area of Brtonigla. Karigador Beach offers opportunities for beach volleyball and snorkelling. These activities give a beach-focused stay some specific highlights.
Cycling Routes Through Karigador
Several cycling routes also pass through Karigador. Four Lands runs through the town and continues to the entrance of Park Umag campsite. From Neapolis to Novigrad passes through Karigador and Dajla; Staza sv. Pelagija runs through Fiorini and reaches Karigador. The routes pass through different places: for Four Lands, the campsite entrance is the next point of reference, while Dajla and Fiorini feature along the other routes. These locations provide a concrete basis for comparing the routes against your own plans.
Dining at Fishermen’s Pier
Hook & Cook is a food and music event at Fishermen’s Pier in Karigador. Chefs, food producers, winemakers and brewers present seafood dishes made with fresh local catches. The event thus combines food and music with the town’s fishing culture. Unlike the theme park, which divides fishing and maritime heritage into four themed areas, Hook & Cook focuses on presenting food.
