If you are looking for a hotel in Brtonigla, church art, landscape and wine can offer different reasons to choose this destination. The town brings together churches with building histories spanning several centuries, the Aleksandar Rukavina Gallery with 37 sculptures, and the St. Zenon hiking trail, which begins in Brtonigla-Verteneglio. There is also the Four Soils theme, which connects four types of Istrian soil with a wine from Brtonigla. You can explore the town according to your interests—through its culture, landscape or wine identity.

Churches with Different Building Histories

The Church of St. Roch dates back to the 14th century. Its main altar includes a carved, polychrome wooden altarpiece, one of the few surviving late Renaissance altarpieces in Istria. The altar is classified as protected cultural heritage. Several aspects come together here: the age of the church, the design of the main altar and its protected status.

The Church of St. Zenon offers a different point of reference in time. It dates back to the 15th century and was remodelled in the 19th century in the Neo-Baroque style. By comparison, the history of the Church of St. Roch goes further back, while the later remodelling adds another chapter to the building history of St. Zenon. If you are interested in architecture and sacred art, the two churches offer different historical points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

Sculptures and Occasional Events

The Aleksandar Rukavina Gallery’s permanent collection focuses on 37 sculptures preserved in the artist’s studio. The gallery sometimes also hosts exhibitions by other artists, as well as musical or literary presentations. The permanent collection and occasional events are therefore distinct aspects of what the gallery offers. You can arrange visits in advance through the tourist board; please reconfirm your visit arrangements before you arrive.

Hiking Trail and Landscape

The St. Zenon hiking trail begins in Brtonigla-Verteneglio and leads to Ĺ karline Nature Park. There, small lakes and a stream have carved a canyon in the direction of the Mirna River. You can allow up to two hours for the trail. The combination of the hiking route, nature park and waterways gives the landscape around Ĺ karline its own place in your travel plans.

Another distinctive landscape feature is Mramornica Cave near Stancija Drušković, close to Brtonigla. Its large underground chamber has colourful formations and stalagmites up to 13 metres high. The cave is accessible via constructed cave paths. Unlike the St. Zenon hiking trail, the focus here is on an underground space and its formations; on the hiking trail, it is the route to the nature park, the small lakes and the canyon.

Four Soils and Wine

The Four Soils experience presents Brtonigla as a meeting point of four types of Istrian soil: white, grey, black and red. Four Soils wine also draws on this distinctive feature, connecting it with Istrian Malvasia. The wine theme adds another subject closely linked to the town’s identity, alongside its churches, gallery and landscape. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in building history, art, a hike, or the connection between soil and wine.
