Vrisnik combines a long-standing procession tradition with views from the church square, trails through the settlement, and traditional cuisine. Culture, landscape, outdoor activities, and food and wine can each be a focus when choosing where to stay.

Views from the church square

From the church square, the view extends across the Stari Grad Plain, vineyards and olive groves, Jelsa Bay, and the sea toward Brač and Biokovo. The panorama brings together a cultural landscape, bay, and sea. The church square offers a specific reference point if the landscape is a factor in choosing where to stay.

A long-standing procession tradition

Vrisnik has participated for more than 500 years in the UNESCO-protected procession “Za križen.” The tradition is seasonal. If you would like to include it in your trip planning, check the current dates in advance.

Trails through Vrisnik and how to get there

Hiking trails run through Vrisnik; one route leads toward places locally known as “Indijanci” and “Ulta stine.” Cycling trails also pass through the settlement. When planning, you can choose between hiking trails with named local destinations and cycling trails that run through the village. As route availability can change, check the current trail route before setting out.

You can reach Vrisnik from two directions: from State Road 116 near Jelsa or via the local road at the turnoff toward Pitve. Check the current signs and road conditions before driving.

Other cultural destinations in the wider destination of Općina Jelsa

In Jelsa, the Following the Cross Gallery is located in the bell tower of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. It opened on July 1, 2026, and displays artifacts contributed by the communities of the six villages involved in the procession: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj, and Vrboska. Contributions from these villages make the communal dimension of the procession visible. The display may change.

Also in the wider destination of Općina Jelsa, the village of Pitve is home to the Viticulture Museum, 2 km from Jelsa. It is a separate collection of the Jelsa Municipality Museum. On display are traditional tools for working in the vineyard, as well as equipment for making and storing wine. For travelers interested in viticulture, the collection adds an insight into tools and winemaking to the local themes. Check the opening hours separately before your visit.
