Jelsa: Local life and Following the Cross
Jelsa’s Pjaca, officially the Square of the Croatian National Revival, is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, with cafés, ice-cream shops, restaurants and small shops. The square offers a glimpse of public life in the town. Jelsa harbour has 54 berths for yachts, motor yachts and catamarans. If you plan to visit, check the latest nautical information: capacity and facilities may change.
The Following the Cross Gallery is located in the bell tower of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary in Jelsa and opened on 1 July 2026. It displays artefacts contributed by communities from the six villages involved in the procession: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska. The items on display may change. Guided storytelling tours present the history, symbolism and distinctive features of the procession. They are offered from 18:00 to 21:00; tour arrangements may change, so check the latest information before visiting.
Museums and historic sites
The Wine Museum is located in Pitve, 2 km from Jelsa, and is an independent collection of the Museum of the Municipality of Jelsa. It displays traditional tools used for vineyard work, as well as equipment for making and storing wine. The collection offers a tangible insight into the different stages of winegrowing. Humac has a small museum with tools and keepsakes from everyday life in the past. As access arrangements may vary, ask about visiting options before you go.
The historic sites also offer different perspectives. Galešnik is a late antique fortress dating from the 6th century; its remains lie above Jelsa. Tor consists of the remains of a small hillfort and a historic watchtower on a hill to the southeast, above the town. Kaštilac Fortress stands at the highest point of the Glavice peninsula and has been listed as a cultural property of the Republic of Croatia since 2012. In Vrboska, the small bridges explain its nickname, “Croatia’s Little Venice.”
Šćedro: Coast, trails and cultural heritage
The island of Šćedro is part of the Municipality of Jelsa and was designated a significant landscape in 1972. Its indented coastline and vegetation typical of Mediterranean forest and maquis communities shape the landscape. Signposted trails make it possible to explore Šćedro on foot. Trail conditions may change; check the latest information before planning your hike.
The ruins of a Dominican monastery lie in Mostir Bay. The monastery was built in the late 15th century and abandoned in the 18th century. The complex also includes the Church of Our Lady of Mercy. The monastery’s history adds another dimension to the landscape of Šćedro, where the coast and vegetation sit alongside traces of past uses and religious architecture.
Cycling and Nordic walking routes
The Na Vrh cycling route starts in Jelsa, passes through Pitve and Humac, and returns to Jelsa. Check the route and surface conditions before setting off. Another option is the Nordic walking route between Jelsa and Pitve: it is 8 km long, of moderate difficulty and takes about two and a half hours. For this route, distance, difficulty and an approximate duration are all useful for planning; Na Vrh is described as a loop starting and ending in Jelsa. Conditions on the Nordic walking route can vary seasonally.
