Church and Market Rights: Sesvete’s History
The Church of Svih Svetih stands in Sesvete’s historic center. The current Baroque church was built from 1766 to 1773 under the patronage of the Zagreb Chapter. In Croatia, it is considered a rare example of central-plan church architecture with two bell towers on the façade. Its construction dates and distinctive architecture offer a concrete way to explore local history without confusing its different periods.
Another historical landmark is the market rights granted to Sesvete in 1457 by King Matthias Corvinus. They included four annual fairs and a weekly market. These two rhythms are part of the town’s historic market tradition: alongside regularly recurring fairs, a weekly market was also held. This means the town’s history can be explored not only through its buildings, but also through its former market regulations.
Roman Road and Museum
The Roman road Siscia–Andautonia–Poetovio ran through what is now the center of Sesvete. It was one of the few ancient routes that continued to be used in the Middle Ages. The history of this route therefore spans more than one era. For your trip planning, it offers a distinct historical focus, separate from the church’s architectural history and the town’s market tradition.
The Muzej Prigorja is located in the protected 18th-century Kurija Zagrebačkog kaptola at Trg D. Domjanića 5 in Sesvete. Its museum structure comprises archaeological, historical, ethnographic and art history collections. The permanent exhibition presents a comprehensive picture of the eastern Zagreb area. Its address, protected building and collection themes place the museum both in a specific building and within a broader regional history.
Cultural Program and Hiking Traditions
The Centar za kulturu Sesvete regularly stages theater performances for children and adults, as well as classical music concerts. Its program also includes dance, drama and visual arts workshops, along with film screenings for both age groups. If you would like to include cultural events in your travel plans, check the announced dates before your trip: performance and workshop schedules may change.
Hiking is also part of a long local tradition. The Sesvete–Dobrodol–Šimunčevec–Frčkovec (Goranec)–Lipa hiking trail opened in 1977. There are also the Sesvete–Lipa hikes, which take place at different times of the year: the winter hike has been held in January since 2003, and the summer hike in August since 2004. For planning purposes, the seasonal distinction is useful: January is the month of the winter hike, and August the month of the summer hike. The exact dates may vary.
Another local tradition is the Sesvetski fašnik, held at Trg Dragutina Domjanića. For many years, the event has been exclusively for children. Together with the hikes and cultural program, it adds recurring events and leisure activities to the historical perspective. Check their dates to see what fits your trip.
