Explore Zagreb through a range of themes: medieval urban history, theaters and museums sit alongside parklands, natural and recreational spaces, and a market offering produce from individual producers and family businesses.

Urban History Between Gradec and Kaptol

Zagreb’s historic core developed in the Middle Ages on two hills: secular Gradec, now the Upper Town, and ecclesiastical Kaptol. Kamenita vrata is the only surviving gate into medieval Gradec. Together, the two districts reflect the different secular and ecclesiastical influences that shaped the historic center.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is Croatia’s oldest theater institution. It officially began operating on November 24, 1860. The funicular also connects urban history with a specific means of transport: it links the Lower Town and Upper Town and is Zagreb’s oldest organized public transport service. Its 66-meter route is considered the shortest in the world among public funiculars. Its exterior and construction have been preserved in their original form, and the funicular is legally protected as a cultural monument. If you plan to take a ride, check the current timetable in advance.

Museums with Different Perspectives

The Zagreb City Museum covers the city’s cultural, artistic, economic and political history, from Roman finds to the modern era. Its permanent exhibition also explores religious, architectural, cultural, leisure-related and everyday topics. Its archaeological exhibits include remains of a prehistoric settlement from the 7th century BC and evidence of a house-workshop from the La Tène period.

The Museum of Broken Relationships takes a different approach: its exhibits are shaped by personal experiences as well as local culture and history. Zagreb’s cultural range thus extends from archaeological evidence and urban history to exhibitions that explore personal experiences.

Parklands, Nature and Leisure

Maksimir is a historic landscape created in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and opened to the public in 1794. The park is considered one of the first public parks in southeastern Europe. Covering 316 hectares, it is a protected monument of landscape architecture and a cultural asset. Forests, meadows, lakes and streams shape the landscape; documented birdlife includes more than 100 species.

The Botanical Garden is part of the Green Horseshoe, Zagreb’s park system. Covering around 4.7 hectares, it includes an English-style arboretum. Its spring exhibition features more than 5,000 plant species.

Jarun combines nature and leisure activities. Its wetland and marshland habitat is home to around a hundred bird species as well as various fish, aquatic animals and insects. The Jarun recreation center includes two lakes, five interconnected islands and around 2,500 meters of pebble beaches. There are also long walking and cycling paths, sports facilities, a 6,500-meter fitness trail, roller-skating areas and a cycling course. When planning your trip, you can take nature watching and outdoor exercise into account as different interests.

Dolac and Zagreb’s Market Life

At Dolac, you can browse, sample and buy produce from individual producers and family businesses. Outdoors, stalls sell fruit, vegetables and dairy products; a covered area offers meat and dairy products, and there is also a dedicated fish market. The range of products and layout may change. If you are going for a specific product, allow for this possibility when planning your visit.

Choose Your Hotel Search Based on Your Travel Interests

Zagreb’s themes offer different ways to plan your stay: medieval urban history, theaters and museums, landscape design and plant life, wetland habitats and sports activities, or a visit to Dolac. If you are looking for hotels in Zagreb, you can start by deciding which of these aspects matters most for your trip. This lets you tailor your search to your own reason for traveling.
