Kozjača is known for the marked Šumarica educational trail and the Miholje celebration marking the village day. Those planning a stay focused on nature and culture will find specific points of interest here: educational stations, a viewpoint, trails with different routes, and local customs. This makes it possible to consider hiking time, route characteristics and local events separately.

The Šumarica Educational Trail

The marked Šumarica educational trail begins at the forester’s lodge of the Velika Gorica Forestry Office near Krušak and ends in the village of Kozjača, at the Chapel of St Michael the Archangel. A wood anemone symbol marks the route. Nine stations cover the local flora and fauna, as well as the cultural significance of the area. Those interested in both nature and local culture will encounter both as explicitly designated topics along the trail.

Landscape features include wooded slopes and ravines, the Curek stream, and a crossing of the Kozara stream. The trail also passes meadows and vineyards near Kozjača. It runs within an Important Plant Area designated as botanically significant in Croatia—a further way of classifying the landscape you will see along the route.

For planning your time, note that Šumarica is not a loop trail: the 2022 tourism leaflet gives a duration of 2 to 2.5 hours one way. The route is marked in both directions. Plan your start and return separately, and check before setting out whether the route described is still in use.

Podgutnica and Banderijalac Compared

The 17.1-kilometre Podgutnica Trail passes the educational Šumarica hiking route. Before returning to Ključić Brdo, it heads to the summit of Lakovica near Kozjača. Its route therefore combines a connection to the educational trail with a path to the summit.

The Banderijalac Trail is 25.2 kilometres long, passes several hamlets and two water springs, and provides rear access to the summit of Lakovica. It is 8.1 kilometres longer than Podgutnica. Both trails include Lakovica, but their other described waypoints differ: Podgutnica includes the educational trail, while Banderijalac passes hamlets and springs.

Miholje and Local Food Culture

Miholje is also the celebration marking Kozjača village day. The 2020 programme began with a mass for the feast of St Michael the Archangel. The local event and its religious opening are thus linked in the description of the celebration, without implying that there is an upcoming event date.

Salenjaci are a traditional pastry made from dough with lard, usually filled with fruit jam. A September 2025 report describes a competition organised by the Kozjača women’s association to make the pastry on St Michael’s Day. This offers a concrete example of local food culture through an event centred on its preparation.

Route Planning and Getting Around

A tourism website describes a regular bus service connecting Krušak and Kozjača with Velika Gorica. Check current timetables before travelling. This is especially useful when planning because Šumarica starts in a different place from where it ends and is not a loop trail.

The 2022 tourism leaflet lists Caffe Bar Pevec at the end of the hiking trail in Kozjača as a place to get refreshments. If you would like to stop there, check whether it is open before your visit. This will help you coordinate the route with your plans while there.
