Gudci: History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Gudci
Gudci Between Landscape and Local History
Gudci lies on the slopes of the Vukomeričke gorice. Several distinct themes come to the fore when choosing this destination: the archaeological traces at Peršin-grad, the history and former daily life of the village, landscape features, and a cycling route that passes through Gudci. You can weigh these aspects according to whether you are more interested in local history, the rural surroundings or cycling.
The Hillside Landscape
Jankovka is a forest above Gudci; the Peščenjak stream is part of the village’s surroundings. Gudci also has its own vineyards. Together with its location on the slopes of the Vukomeričke gorice, this offers a variety of landscape features: forest, stream, vineyards and hillside terrain. For travelers who consider the rural surroundings when choosing a destination, this combination is more informative than any single landscape feature.
Traces at Peršin-grad
The remains of Peršin-grad lie next to the settlement of Gudci and its hamlet of Peršinovec. Peršin-grad was built on the site of a prehistoric hillfort dating from the Late Bronze Age. This earlier structure consisted of four separate, leveled mounds, the southern one being the largest. This makes it possible to distinguish two periods at Peršin-grad: the Late Bronze Age hillfort and the later construction of Peršin-grad on the same site. The four separate mounds also help you picture the earlier structure as a group rather than as a single hill.
Local History and Daily Life
The bilingual local chronicle is written in standard Croatian and the local Kajkavian dialect. It documents Gudci’s founding more than 200 years ago and the village’s development, as well as agriculture, livestock farming, cooking, customs and life in the 20th century. It thus connects historical development with aspects of everyday and rural life. The references to cooking and customs broaden the focus beyond agriculture and livestock farming to other areas of daily life. Compared with Peršin-grad, the focus shifts: there, the subject is a prehistoric hillfort and its location, while the chronicle covers the village’s development and ways of life up to the 20th century.
The Springs of Kostanjevec
In the past, the springs of Kostanjevec supplied residents with drinking water. They are marked on a map and identified by information boards; before visiting, check whether these are still in place.
Cycling the Route
The “Šumska i cestovna ruta po Vukomeričkim goricama” route passes through Gudci, among other places, and offers cycling on forest roads and trails. It also includes paved roads and gravel paths. If you are considering cycling as a main activity, this mix of surfaces is a specific point to bear in mind when planning your trip. Unlike Peršin-grad and the local chronicle, the route is not another historical topic but a named cycling option. This lets you weigh your different interests—local history, rural landscapes and cycling—separately when choosing your destination.
