Discover Topusko: Culture, Trails and Thermal Waters
Accommodation in Topusko
Topusko brings together protected landscapes, historical traces and thermal waters. If you are looking for hotels for your trip to Topusko, you can start by planning your stay around these interests: would you like to explore the town on foot, learn about its history or include the thermal water facilities? The following trails and local features offer concrete points of reference.
Landscape and trails
Part of the protected significant landscape area of Petrova Gora lies within the municipality of Topusko. It is protected for its forest habitat and landscape and historical values. In the centre of Topusko is Nikolino brdo, a wooded hill 184 metres high. Stone remains and hollows on the hill are associated with a fortified town attributed to King Andrew II.
For a walk, there is an easy 5.3-kilometre circular route through the town. It starts at Top-Terme and passes English Park, the Altar of Jupiter, Opatovina Park, the Gothic portal, the Mollinary spring, and the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Its length, circular layout and listed stops can help you fit this walk into your day.
Historical traces in the town
The Opatovina Portal preserves the only remaining Gothic church façade of the Cistercian abbey of Topusko. The façade is 23 metres high. Opatovina Park also contains the remains of an archaeological monument associated with the Gothic entrance portal of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Another testament to local history is Kamena Spomenica on Babićev brijeg, where names, initials, dates and other marks are carved into the living rock. The site and the traces on Nikolino brdo show different aspects of Topusko’s past—from preserved architectural fragments to rock carvings and a historical attribution.
The cultural and historical ensemble of Topusko is classified as protected cultural heritage under the designation Z-4136. If you are planning a visit with questions about monument protection or preservation, check its legal classification in advance.
Thermal waters and baths
The names Blatne or Crijetne Kupke refer to the thermal mud and peat used for treatment. The Top-Terme pool complex is described as having five thermal-water pools of varying depths and temperatures. The complex operates seasonally; check whether a visit is currently possible before you travel.
According to the regional tourism description, Lječilište Topusko uses thermal water from three main springs and several smaller springs to treat injuries and conditions affecting the locomotor system, nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Topusko therefore offers several distinct thermal-water experiences: the historical significance of mud and peat, the pools at Top-Terme and the described use of spring water by Lječilište Topusko.
Cycling route and practical information
The Topusko–Ponikvari–Topusko cycling route is 6.7 kilometres long. The destination plan gives its duration as less than one hour. Unlike the circular route through town, this ride goes from Topusko to Ponikvari and back. Conditions and signage may change; check the route before setting off. The annual Biciklijada “Putevima bana Jelačića” takes place in the Topusko destination area. If you plan to travel for it, check the latest event dates.
There are designated parking zones in the town centre. As parking regulations may change, it is advisable to check the current situation before travelling. This will help you plan around the highlights that bring you to Topusko: local history, walking and cycling trails, or thermal waters.
