Potok: Chapels, Festivals and Nature Park

Potok is one of the settlements on the edge of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Chapels, religious feast days and cultural events add specific local occasions to this connection with the natural surroundings. If you plan to travel for a particular celebration, check the dates for the year you want: not every reference to an event describes one that recurs annually.

Chapels and Velika Gospa

In the hamlet of Kutanija stands the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, built by local residents in the 1930s. Mass is celebrated there every year on Saint Anthony’s feast day. Another religious site is the Chapel of the Assumption of Mary in Potok. Municipal reports from 2022 and 2025 describe a solemn Mass there for Velika Gospa. A notice dated August 14, 2025, also listed a triduum of Masses leading up to the feast. The two chapels are therefore associated with different occasions: in Kutanija, the annual Mass on Saint Anthony’s feast day is an established tradition; the references to Velika Gospa concern the Chapel of the Assumption of Mary and a multi-day program of Masses.

Culture and Events

The Marijanski susreti program included folklore performances by cultural and arts associations in August 2022. A notice dated August 14, 2025, mentioned a gathering outside the community hall as part of the Velika Gospa program. Folklore performances and a gathering held as part of a religious program illustrate different aspects of local events.

Competitions and sports also feature in some programs. The traditional KUP Potoka is a firefighting competition organized by the local volunteer fire department. An August 2025 notice described it as the 38th edition. The August 2025 program also included the Bolčević-Medić-Marković memorial football match in Potok between ŠNK Sloga Potok and a neighboring club from Osekovo. Cultural Heritage and Wetlands

In June 2025, KUD Potočanka was recognized for 50 years of work and for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the town of Popovača. The cultural connection therefore extends beyond individual feast days to include the preservation of the town’s heritage.

A 2010 report names Potok as the host of the main part of the traditional event “Budućnost na rubu močvare,” which is associated with World Wetlands Day. This historical event connection complements the religious and folklore occasions with a gathering focused on wetlands.
