The Municipality of Donji Kraljevec can be explored through several distinct themes: Rudolf Steiner’s legacy, archaeological traces from widely separated periods, and speedway history. In Donji Kraljevec are both the birthplace of Dr. Rudolf Steiner and the Centar dr. Rudolfa Steinera, named after him. Archaeological sites and a special protection area add archaeological and ecological themes to the picture.

Rudolf Steiner and the educational centre

The Centar dr. Rudolfa Steinera is a multidisciplinary institution that connects science, art and tourism on the basis of Rudolf Steiner’s teachings. It delivers educational programmes and workshops and organises national and international seminars and conferences on these fields and teachings. The Section for Biodynamic Agriculture at the Goetheanum has also included the centre as an educational institution in the world of biodynamics. Educational work and professional exchange are therefore part of its profile, alongside connecting different fields of knowledge.

The birthplace of Dr. Rudolf Steiner is in the centre of Donji Kraljevec at Ludbreška 13. It was discovered in 1966 and has since been visited by thousands of admirers of his work from around the world. The birthplace and the Centar offer two different points of connection: one is associated with Steiner’s biography, the other with the presentation and discussion of his teachings.

Cultural history and archaeological traces

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene and the Pillar of the Holy Trinity are jointly listed as a single immovable cultural property under registration number Z-1111.

Archaeological sites point to several periods. The early medieval cemetery in Sveti Juraj u Trnju dates from the late 11th century. East of Donji Kraljevec, the prehistoric site of Gorice lies partly within the local cemetery; pottery found there is attributed to the Late Bronze Age, more specifically the Urnfield culture. Za vrtima, in the western part of Donji Kraljevec, is also a prehistoric site. Pottery found there attests to settlement traces from the Early Iron Age, from the 7th to the 5th century BC. The pottery from Gorice and Za vrtima thus points to different prehistoric periods, while the cemetery in Sveti Juraj u Trnju belongs to a much later period.

Speedway and dated events

The Speedway Stadion Milenium represents another part of the area’s history. On 29 April 2023, it hosted the FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Croatia. Its event history also includes the Speedway European Championship and three FIM GP Challenges, the respective final rounds of Speedway GP qualifying.

The programme for the “Dani dr. Rudolfa Steinera” event, held from 14 February to 14 March 2026, also had an international connection: it included a conference on biodynamic viticulture. This dated programme adds a specific focus on wine-growing to the themes surrounding Steiner and biodynamics.

Nature and cycling connections

The special protection area HR2001347 Donje Međimurje is located within the Municipality of Donji Kraljevec and is important for species and habitat types. This means that, alongside cultural history and events, habitat protection is also a theme for the municipality.

For cycling route planning, there are two older route references: in 2015, a then-new pedestrian and cycling path along county road ŽC 2026 between Prelog and Donji Kraljevec was reported. Also dating from 2015 is the reference to a cycle lane connecting Goričan and Donji Kraljevec. Check the current conditions locally before relying on these details for your trip.

A regional perspective: Međimurje County

Beyond the municipality, Međimurje County offers further nature and cultural attractions. Within the county, Mura–Drava Regional Park covers 16,962.54 hectares. The Mađerkin breg viewpoint is located in Robadje. It is about 27 metres high and offers a view from Međimurje’s highest point, at 361 metres above sea level. The two height figures refer to different things: the structure and the highest point of the terrain.

Other destinations in the county include the Osojnički Gallery in Grabrovnik, an international outdoor sculpture collection open to visitors year-round, and the “Med dvemi vodami” visitor centre, with two modernly equipped galleries and a permanent interpretive exhibition. These regional attractions complement local themes without replacing the Municipality of Donji Kraljevec’s own highlights.
