Perušić: Culture, Karst and History
Accommodation in Perušić
Perušić combines historic sites with a karst landscape of caves, an underground river and educational trails. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in the old town and church history or in nature and caves. Some of the following attractions are located in the broader destination of Općina Perušić; this larger geographic area should be distinguished from Perušić itself.
Cultural history in Perušić and Općina Perušić
The old town of Perušić had square walls with defensive towers at three corners. Its remains are among the best-preserved defensive fortifications in Lika. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross also reflects a varied history: it is a medieval Gothic church, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, and was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule.
In the broader destination of Općina Perušić, the church has nine altars and 28 interior furnishings listed in Croatia’s national register of movable cultural heritage. The gilded cross on its tower was transferred from the old Zagreb Cathedral. Pisani kamen is associated with a Roman dispute settlement recorded on an inscribed stone.
Kosinjski most is also part of the broader destination of Općina Perušić. The stone bridge spans the Lika River, is 70 meters long and connects Gornji and Donji Kosinj. The different sites give an impression of how cultural history is represented in several places across the wider municipality.
Caves and karst landscape
Grabovača Cave Park is the only cave park in Europe. In the broader destination of Općina Perušić, it has been under preventive protection in the “Significant Landscape” category since 2009. The park includes eight caves and a pit. Five of its caves are protected as geomorphological natural monuments: Samograd, Medina, Amidžina, Budina ledenica and Petrićeva.
Samograd is the only cave in the park open to tourists and is 345 meters long. It consists of four chambers and contains two stalactite bridges. Samograd is a lit cave; it opened to visitors in 1889. The air temperature in the cave ranges from 7 to 10 °C. The Lika is a 78-kilometer-long underground river that also shapes the region’s karst landscape. In Općina Perušić, the fir tree Jela Car is 42.5 meters tall and has a trunk circumference of 5.42 meters.
Educational trails and activities
The “Man and Karst” educational trail is 3.5 kilometers long, passes three caves and a pit, and reaches a viewing platform at an altitude of 743 meters. The fauna educational trail is 750 meters long and provides information about protected and endangered Natura 2000 species. The lengths offer a direct comparison of the two routes; their themes also differ: one focuses on karst and caves, the other on animal species and nature conservation.
The Klisa educational trail starts in the center of Perušić and includes a viewing platform overlooking the old town. In the broader destination of Općina Perušić, Grabovača Cave Park offers educational trails and programs. Trail access conditions may change; check them before your visit.
Activities in the wider area include hiking, mountain hiking, cycling and kayaking.
