The Municipality of Perušić offers two distinct areas of interest to guide your trip planning: the cave landscape of Grabovača Cave Park and the built heritage of Perušić. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Protected cave landscape of Grabovača

Grabovača Cave Park has been under preventive protection in the “significant landscape” category since 2009. Five caves within the park are protected as geomorphological natural monuments: Samograd, Medina, Amidžina, Budina ledenica and Petrićeva. Samograd is part of this group of caves and is also the only cave in the park open to tourists.

Samograd and preparing for your visit

Samograd is 345 metres long and consists of four chambers. The air temperature in the cave ranges from 7 to 10 °C. It is therefore a good idea to bring an extra warm layer for your cave visit. The length, number of chambers and temperature are specific details to take into account when planning.

The cave park offers educational trails and programmes. It can be reached by car and bus. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable before your visit. This lets you plan your journey around the available transport options without assuming a particular connection.

Built and cultural heritage in Perušić

The remains of the old town of Perušić are among the best-preserved defensive fortifications in Lika. They offer a different focus from the cave park: here, the history of a defensive structure takes centre stage, while Grabovača is defined by its caves and protected landscape.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross has nine altars. Twenty-eight elements of its interior furnishings are listed in Croatia’s national register of movable cultural monuments. A gilded cross taken from the old Zagreb Cathedral stands on the church tower. The old town fortifications and the church’s furnishings represent two distinct aspects of cultural heritage: a defensive structure and the interior of a single religious building.
