Karlobag lies on the coast between Baška Draga and Draga Tatinja, at the foot of Oštarije Pass and opposite the island of Pag. The town is defined by its maritime heritage, historic buildings and hiking trails. When choosing your destination, you can therefore take both its coastal setting and your interest in culture into account.

Historical Heritage and Maritime History

Fortica preserves the remains of a small square fortress dating from the 13th or 14th century. It stands on an elevated plateau about 250 metres from the coast. Historically, it was used to monitor ship traffic heading towards Pag. The remains of a cistern that supplied water have also been preserved.

The single-nave Church of St. Joseph has a side chapel dedicated to St. Anthony. The church also contains a valuable painting of the Last Supper by Christopher Tasco. The Capuchin monastery has a rainwater cistern six metres in diameter, with a capacity of about 180,000 litres. The monastery library contains theological literature from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows was built in 1727 and converted into a small church in 1740. These two dates also offer insight into the history of Karlobag’s religious buildings.

The open-air fishing museum at Trg Giardin uses Giardin Square to showcase Karlobag’s fishing and maritime heritage. Visitors can explore digital content about local fishermen, fishing methods and fish specialities. Alongside the churches and Fortica, the history of life by the sea is also in focus.

Hiking Trails between Karlobag and Baške Oštarije

The Karlobag–Baške Oštarije hiking trail connects the town with Baške Oštarije and runs partly along the historic Karolina and Teresiana roads. It is 11.3 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 1,083 metres. The starting point is Baška Draga, about ten minutes from Karlobag town centre. A turnoff leads to the ruins of St. Vitus Church in about ten minutes. Along the way, the route offers views of Pag and the peaks of the central Velebit. When planning, consider the trail length and elevation difference together, and check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Tereziana educational trail, reserved exclusively for pedestrians, is also located in the Karlobag hinterland. From there, views extend over the Adriatic, Pag and the Baške Oštarije valley. This route adds its own trail and landscape perspective to the connection between the coast and the hinterland.
