Which of these should shape your stay? This can help you decide whether architecture, landscape or the opportunities in the wider destination are your main focus.
Architecture and History in Donji Lapac
Donji Lapac developed as a typical small centre of the Military Frontier, with the appearance of a street settlement. A distinctive building in the town centre is the Stari hotel Ozeblin. The single-storey corner building stands at a road junction and dates from 1912; its architecture features Art Nouveau elements. It is considered a defining part of Donji Lapac’s identity and a rare Art Nouveau building in Lika.
The parish church of St John Paul II was consecrated in 2016. It is the only church in the Gospić-Senj Diocese and the Rijeka Archdiocese dedicated to the Pope. Obljaj also connects local history and landscape: a Roman fort once stood there, and its wall remains were still visible in 1835.
In the wider destination of Općina Donji Lapac, the churches in Lički Doljani and Nebljusi also offer historical points of interest. The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Lički Doljani was built in 1799; its bell tower was added in 1912. The Church of St Elijah in Nebljusi dates from 1795 and was restored in 1964 and 2003.
Karst Landscape and Water
Lapačko polje is a 6.8 km² karst field, with the hill of Obljaj at its centre. The Kula stream disappears beneath Obljaj and re-emerges as Jošića potok. The polje and the course of the water offer two different perspectives on the landscape: the expanse of the karst field and the change from an underground stream to one that reappears.
