Općina Hum na Sutli: Hills, a Border River and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Općina Hum na Sutli
Rolling hills, the Sutla River along a centuries-old border and diverse traces of history shape Općina Hum na Sutli. The landscape, archaeological sites, castles, language and glassmaking tradition offer a range of starting points for planning your trip.
Landscape and historic places
The landscape is shaped by hills and low mountains, distinctive peaks, clearings and stream valleys. In Hum na Sutli, the Sutla River forms a landscape along a centuries-old border. Here, nature and culture come together in a destination whose character is shaped by both its topography and its historic places.
Plemićki grad Vrbovec is located in Klenovec Humski. The municipality’s 2026 draft spatial plan lists the site as protected immovable cultural property. The Veliki Gradiš archaeological site is also near Klenovec Humski. Dating from the 13th century, it is one of the oldest defensive fortifications in the Zagorje region. Vrbovec, meanwhile, is mentioned in 1269 as the seat of the Archdeaconry of Vrbovec and as the administrative and ecclesiastical centre of the surrounding area.
The history of Mali Tabor can be traced through several points in time: historical documents mention the place in 1511 under the name Kys Thabor. Mali Tabor was originally a castle, later converted into a Baroque mansion. In the 18th century, it was a single-storey mansion with three cylindrical towers. These details offer different perspectives on the same place over time, without reducing its architectural history to a single period.
Language and glassmaking tradition
Intangible cultural heritage is also part of the character of Hum na Sutli. The Humski language is registered as protected intangible cultural heritage of Croatia and is used by local people in everyday life and within families. There is also a 150-year-old glassmaking tradition. The cultural picture therefore includes not only archaeological and architectural heritage, but also a language still in use and a long-standing local tradition.
Cycling from two different perspectives
The 15-kilometre circular route “Through the landscape of playful hills” starts and ends in Hum na Sutli. The ride is listed as taking one hour, with a total ascent of 220 metres. Its distance, riding time and elevation gain give you practical details for planning the loop.
The “Along the Sutla River Valley” route has a different focus: it passes through Hum na Sutli and offers cycling through nature and culture on both sides of the border. While the first route is described as a loop with a set distance, riding time and total ascent, the second focuses on its cross-border natural and cultural character. You can choose between them based on your available time and the elevation gain, or on the route’s theme.
Getting there and finding your way
Two road connections are given for getting around. The D206 state road connects Hum na Sutli in the direction of Pregrada and Krapinske Toplice, and to the Zabok–Zagreb highway. The D207 state road leads towards Lupinjak and, via Đurmanec, to the Macelj–Zagreb motorway. When considering where to stay, these directions can help you relate your planned destinations to your route there.
The municipality has three border crossings: an international crossing in Lupinjak and inter-state crossings in Hum na Sutli and Mali Tabor. Knowing the types of crossings adds to the road information and helps you factor in the border landscape as you plan your route.
Culture in the wider Krapinsko-Zagorska destination
The wider Krapinsko-Zagorska destination offers further cultural highlights. The Krapina Neanderthal Museum presents its permanent exhibition across 18 themed areas. The Staro Selo Kumrovec open-air museum conveys the authentic appearance of a Zagorje village from the early 20th century and includes around 40 restored buildings of traditional design. These regional examples add archaeological and traditional village history to the local themes, without conflating them with attractions in Općina Hum na Sutli.
