Ogulin brings together several distinct reasons to visit: Frankopan history, fairy-tale culture and events, geological features, and opportunities to enjoy the water and walking routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Ogulin, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your visit. For travel by car, the distance of about two kilometres from the Zagreb–Split motorway is also a useful guide.

Frankopan History and the Museum

Bernardin Frankopan built Ogulin’s Frankopan Castle around 1500 above the Dobra Gorge. The Chapel of St Bernardin offers further historical insights: it has been restored, features clear Gothic elements, and displays a tombstone belonging to Stjepan II Frankopan.

The Zavičajni muzej presents several perspectives on history and culture. A memorial room is dedicated to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić; another exhibition explores mountaineering and alpinism in Croatia. The archaeological exhibition includes Japodian and Roman finds discovered in the wider Ogulin area. Its subject matter thus ranges from a well-known Frankopan castle to finds from the surrounding region.

Fairy-Tale Centre and Events

Ivanina kuća bajke is a multimedia, interactive visitor centre dedicated to fairy tales and fairy-tale creativity. The centre organises creative educational programmes for children and adults throughout the year. These include activities in storytelling, literary and visual expression, film, performing and applied arts, and design. If you would like to combine your visit with a specific programme, check the latest access and schedule information in advance.

During the Ogulinski festival bajke, Ogulin’s streets and squares become festival stages. The cultural and artistic programme includes theatre, street theatre, storytelling and creative workshops. Dates and specific activities vary from one edition to the next. Bajkovita zima uz ognjište is also part of the events programme: Ivanina kuća bajke organises this traditional storytelling event in Ogulin. Programme details depend on the edition.

Đulin ponor, the Dobra and Sabljaci

Đulin ponor, a hydrogeological natural monument, lies in the centre of Ogulin. The Dobra disappears underground there, and the ponor continues through Medvedica Cave, forming Croatia’s longest speleological feature. The cliffs at the ponor are considered a challenge for mountaineers. The Dobra is also suitable for swimming in Ogulin. A proteus was discovered at the nearby Rupećica Cave.

The Sabljaci reservoir lies on the Zagorska Mrežnica, covers 170 hectares and is locally known as the “Ogulin Sea”. Activities there include swimming, rowing, windsurfing, walking and cycling; rowing regattas are also held. Water conditions and organised activities may vary. The lake offers a different focus from the geological features in the centre: here, the emphasis is on water-based activities and routes around the reservoir.

Hiking and Cycling around Ogulin

The walk from Ogulin towards Klek is listed as taking about three hours. Other marked routes lead towards Kneja and Stožac. Nearby Klek is considered a botanical reserve with rich Tertiary flora; its vertical rock face is used by mountaineers. Ogulin’s themed routes include Ruta bajke and a botanical nature trail on Klek. Check the route markings before setting out.

Cycling routes can also be compared by their stated distances: two marked regional cycling routes total 131 kilometres. Almost 100 kilometres of local cycling routes connect with the regional routes. Bikepark Ribarići is also part of Ogulin’s cycling offer. These figures distinguish between regional routes, local connections and the bike park, rather than combining them into a single tour.

A Regional Product of Origin

Ogulinski kiseli kupus, also known as Ogulinsko kiselo zelje, is registered as a product with a protected designation of origin. It is produced and processed in the territory of the City of Ogulin and the Municipality of Josipdol. Alongside its buildings, fairy-tale offerings and natural attractions, this product with a clearly defined place of origin is another part of the region’s local identity.
