Generalski Stol lies between the Mrežnica and Dobra rivers. When looking for a hotel, the landscape offers as much orientation as the history of the place: the Mrežnica, a cycling route, and structures along the historic Jozefina Road offer different points of reference for planning your trip.

The Mrežnica and its protected landscape

The Mrežnica around Generalski Stol is associated with 22 waterfalls. The river system as a whole has more than 90 travertine waterfalls, which form lake-like stretches of the Mrežnica in places. The two figures therefore refer to different geographical areas: the area around Generalski Stol and the river system as a whole.

The lower Mrežnica in the Municipality of Generalski Stol is part of the protected area “Mrežnica,” designated as a significant landscape and covering 1,401.79 hectares. The protected-area documentation is dated March 14, 2024. This also makes it possible to consider the local river landscape in the context of protecting the Mrežnica.

Cycling route and activities on the river

Cycling Route 6 leads to Generalski Stol and then follows the Mrežnica. Through the settlement, it runs along the historic Jozefina Road. At 63 kilometers long and with an elevation difference of 116 meters, these two figures describe different aspects of the route: its total length and the stated elevation difference. They help put the route into context, but do not in themselves indicate how challenging a ride may be for an individual.

Rafting is also associated with this stretch of river. Rafting is organized on the route between Generalski Stol and Zvečaj; Mrežnica Adventure’s trips also usually run between these places. Seasonal availability may vary, so it is a good idea to check whether the activity is running before your trip.

Local history on the Jozefina Road

Generalski Stol was called Lipovac in the Middle Ages. In the first half of the 17th century, Vuk II Krsto Frankopan chose the place as the site for a judicial table; Generalski Stol later received its present name. The settlement subsequently developed in connection with the construction of the Jozefina Road, which took place between 1770 and 1779. The road is therefore part of both the history of the place and the present-day route of Cycling Route 6.

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua stands in the center of Generalski Stol on the historic Jozefina Road. It was built of stone and brick in 1829. The church and its votive chapel are listed as protected cultural property under designation Z-3093. Below the church is an older chapel with an image of St. Nikola Tavelić.

A Catholic church in the historic center also stands out for its orientation: its entrance faces east, while the altar faces west. The historic center is also home to an ethnographic collection presenting local traditions. At the Globornica Bridge, construction history and the local landscape come together: the bridge dates from the last quarter of the 19th century and is described as a unique and significant example in the history of Croatian stone bridge construction.

Putting the destination in context: the Municipality of Generalski Stol

Within the wider destination of the Municipality of Generalski Stol, the Mrežnica and Tounjčica area is protected as a significant landscape and natural monument, and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Mrežnica river area within the municipality includes waterfalls, meadow clearings, farmland, steep wooded slopes, watermills, and swimming spots. The Dobra corridor within the municipality also has its own landscape character, including wooded slopes, meadows, farmland, mills, drinking-water springs, and waterfalls. These regional connections add context to the area between the Mrežnica and Dobra without attributing landscape features to any one settlement.

A nearby archaeological site

Crkvišće is the local name for the site of a medieval parish church on Janjač Hill. The church is believed to have been destroyed during Ottoman incursions. A virtual tour of the archaeological site is available. It offers a way to explore Crkvišće without assuming that the site is currently accessible.

Generalski Stol is also connected to the Zagreb–Rijeka railway line. This gives you different options when planning your trip: the river landscape and cycling route, historic buildings in the center, or the rail connection. Which of these matters most to you depends on what you want to focus on during your stay.
