Pražnica is an old medieval settlement in the interior of the island of Brač and is considered a pastoral village on the plateau. Pastureland and numerous traditional water ponds—lokve—shape its rural character. The landscape and sacred buildings offer different points of interest to help you plan your trip.

Landscape and trails around Pražnica

A narrow stone path leads from the area around Pražnica to the ruins of Straževnik and the pre-Romanesque Church of St. George. The church is mentioned as early as 1111 and contains a Renaissance stone relief from the 15th century. If you plan to take this route, be aware that access conditions may vary, and check them before setting out.

The lokve, traditional water ponds, are as much a part of the village’s character as the pastureland. This rural focus sets it apart from the buildings, which offer another way to experience the history of the village. If you want to consider both landscape and older settlement history when choosing a destination, Pražnica offers specific points of interest for each.

Churches and cultural connections

The Church of All Saints, built in 1638, stands on the main square. Romanesque-Gothic elements from the 17th century are visible on the church. The cemetery chapel of St. Cyprian, dating from the 13th century, stands in the Pražnica cemetery. It contains a Renaissance stone relief from 1467, which local tradition attributes to the workshop of Nikola Firentinac. The dates refer to different buildings and works of art: the church, the older chapel and the relief.

Pražnica’s cultural character also includes an archaic form of the Brač Chakavian dialect, which the village has preserved. This linguistic connection complements the sacred architecture and medieval settlement history with another local tradition.

Regional cuisine and other connections

Pražnica is associated with Brač cheese, bread baked under the peka and spit-roasted lamb as regional specialties. These culinary connections add regional food culture to the impression of a rural village. Together with the lokve, pastureland and historic buildings, they offer various aspects to consider when deciding where to stay.
