Postira: Old Town, Early Christian Traces and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Postira
Postira brings together an old town, early Christian traces, a coastal landscape and a range of hiking options. If you’re looking for a hotel in Postira, the following topics about the town and its routes can help you choose the focus of your trip.
The Old Town and Early Christian History
A walk through the old town takes you past a small bridge, cobbled lanes and the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist. Postira’s narrowest street is called “Pust me proć” and is located in Škarića dvori. Its historical details range from the streetscape to the history of its church buildings.
The parish church was built in the mid-16th century on the ruins of an early Christian basilica complex dating from the 5th to 6th century. This site brings together the later parish church and much older early Christian remains. The taverns in Škarića dvori are also associated with local wine and olive oil. Brač olive oil received a European designation of origin in 2022.
Lovrečina and Early Christian Heritage
East of Postira lies Lovrečina, a sandy bay whose landscape continues inland as cultivated land. An early Christian church dedicated to St. Lawrence has been preserved there, along with a well-preserved cross-shaped baptismal font. The coastal landscape and early Christian heritage are two distinct aspects of this place.
Mirje offers another glimpse into the island’s early Christian history: the site is about a half-hour walk from Postira and is considered the richest early Christian site on Brač.
Hiking Trails and Different Distances
Via Brattia is a circular tourist and hiking route about 140 kilometers long that passes through Postira. Hikers can start the route in Postira; it is marked in both directions. Its length makes it a much larger route option than the Good Friday procession route.
The procession covers a 5.5-kilometer penitential walk, led by a cross-bearer carrying a 30-kilogram cross. The Good Friday route can be walked year-round, while the procession itself takes place on Good Friday. The distances show two different scales: a long circular route and a shorter, religiously themed walk.
Events and Sports
The “Olive Picking World Championship” has been held in Postira since 2017 and takes place in October. Competitions include hand-picking olives and quizzes about olive growing. The program also includes tastings, excursions and entertainment evenings. Program items and specific dates may vary from one edition to the next, so check the dates for your travel year.
The central sports center has two natural-grass football pitches, two tennis courts, a cageball court and a bocce court. Advance notice, reservation and payment are required to use the facilities.
