Cocos Island offers cultural experiences as well as distinctive natural attractions. West Island is home to an art gallery in a restored wooden barge; Home Island offers guided cultural tours and traditional crafts, while Direction Island brings together a beach, lagoon and natural drift-snorkelling spot. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing places based on the experiences that interest you most.

Art and culture on West Island and Home Island

On West Island, the Big Barge Art Gallery is located in the hull of a restored wooden barge. You can view, buy or create artworks there. The opportunity to get creative yourself adds an active way to experience art alongside viewing finished works.

On Home Island, experiences include Ossie’s Culture Tour and traditional crafts such as basket weaving and woodwork. Local operators also run guided cultural tours featuring snorkelling, diving, island hopping and fishing. Tour and activity offerings and availability may vary; check current availability if you have a particular activity in mind.

West Island and Home Island offer different cultural experiences: the gallery is on West Island; on Home Island, you’ll find crafts and a range of tour formats. If you’re weighing up viewing or creating art versus craft-based or guided experiences, this distinction can help you choose.

Beach, lagoon and snorkelling on Direction Island

Direction Island is home to Cossie’s Beach and a lagoon with crystal-clear water. The Rip is a natural drift-snorkelling spot; its waters are home to reef fish, colourful corals, reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and parrotfish. Cossie’s Beach and the lagoon define the scenic experience, while the Rip is the specific destination for drift snorkelling. Sightings of the marine life mentioned may vary; check local conditions before entering the water. The island also has wood-fired barbecues and shaded pondoks (shelters) for picnics and relaxation, as well as picnic facilities by the lagoon. Facilities may change, so check their condition before your visit.

Snorkelling options also differ: the Rip on Direction Island is a natural drift-snorkelling spot, while snorkelling on Home Island is part of guided cultural tours run by local operators. This lets you decide in advance whether you’re more interested in a specific snorkelling spot or a guided tour with several activities.

Factor ferry days into your travel plans

The public ferry runs twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, from West Island and Home Island to Direction Island. Both islands are departure points for the same destination. If you’re planning to visit Cossie’s Beach, the lagoon or the Rip, take the travel day and departure point into account. Check the timetable before your trip, as service details may change.
