Hilly and partly flat in the north, markedly more mountainous in the south: the municipality of Elena is shaped by steep slopes and deeply cut river valleys. These landscapes are home to historic buildings, protected areas and trails, offering different ways to spend your stay.

Landscape, Rivers and Protected Areas

The rivers whose headwaters and valleys lie within the municipality include the Veselina, Kostelska, Elenska, Miikovska and Bebrovska. The Yovkovtsi Reservoir lies almost entirely within the municipal boundaries. Extensive deciduous and coniferous forests define the surrounding area; reports describe deer, wild boar, birds of prey, trout and other freshwater fish among its wildlife.

The Haydushki Chukar Reserve is located in the area of Buynovtsi. In the Kostel area, Byala Krava Reserve protects 91 hectares of old-growth beech forest and light-colored volcanic rock formations. In protected areas, access along marked trails, including for educational purposes, is permitted subject to the applicable rules. Follow the current protected-area regulations and stay on marked trails.

Architectural History and Museums

The Five Razsukanov Houses form an architecturally significant ensemble of national importance: five houses stand beneath one roof. They date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are privately owned and are regarded as a single ensemble.

The Daskalolivnitsa was Bulgaria’s first classroom school and was built in 1844. Its complex includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a site of national importance. Icon painters David and Yakov completed its interior paintings in 1817–1818. The Church of St. Nicholas is also the oldest church in Elena and the region. The Kamburov Inn displays ethnographic exhibits on agriculture, animal husbandry, crafts and jewelry, as well as folk costumes, carpets and woven belts.

Elena’s Paleontological Museum is housed in the Popnikolov House, a site of national importance. It displays university collections and material gathered from fossil sites around Elena. The Science Museum offers a different perspective on the region: its nearly 30 handmade exhibits demonstrate physical laws and chemical phenomena. They include an Archimedes’ screw, a pendulum clock mechanism and a drawing robot. Visits must be arranged in advance.

Waterfall, Hiking Trails and Activities

Hristovski Waterfall is on the Miikovska River, where the water drops nine meters. The surrounding protected area covers three hectares. After parking near the turnoff, you can reach the waterfall on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes. The surrounding meadows are suitable for picnics or camping.

The Markov Kamak–Rayuv Kamak hiking route requires a different time commitment, with around three hours allocated for the hike. Along the way, the landscape includes ridgelines, oak-hornbeam forest and rock formations, as well as views of Yovkovtsi Reservoir. The difference between the short walk to the waterfall and the several-hour route can help you choose outings according to the time you have available.

Fishing at Yovkovtsi Reservoir is restricted to designated areas; fish species include carp, silver carp and zander. The access road is mostly unpaved. Check the current restrictions before going fishing. Bike trips in the area can include picnics by the river, tastings of Elena meat specialties, seasonal swimming in the Borovishitsa River and a zip line.

Local Honey and Wine
