Turia brings together the national mask-games festival “Starci v Turia,” several exhibitions and the nearby Thracian sanctuary of Pirostiya. Its cultural themes range from Kuker customs to manuscripts and everyday objects. This gives you different starting points for planning: the mask-game tradition, the history of Chudomir House or a route to a striking rock formation. For trip planning, the distinction is practical: the festival and exhibitions offer cultural highlights, while Pirostiya, with its marked trail, provides a specific route to plan.

Mask Games and Local Traditions

“Starci v Turia” is an annual national mask-games festival. The 2024 program featured the performance “Zagovavane”: performers from Turia Municipality presented evening ritual practices associated with regional Kuker games. Unlike this specific program item, local traditions surrounding Sirni Zagovezni bring together several practices: Kuker games, songs, dances and communal bathing in the river. The exact form these traditions take may vary.

Chudomir House and Exhibitions

Chudomir House focuses on biography. The exhibitions presented there explore the life and work of the writer and artist. Exhibits include original manuscripts, personal documents, photographs, facsimiles and objects; there is also an art gallery. The house was reconstructed in its original form using detailed descriptions and sketches of the former rooms. In 1998, it was declared an immovable cultural asset of national significance. Personal records and the reconstructed rooms thus offer two different ways to explore the life and work.

Nashentsi Hall in Turia is also a permanent exhibition. The village museum in Turia, located in the Chitalishte Chudomir, displays household objects, children’s drawings of Kukers and authentic Kuker masks. These places have different focuses: Chudomir House explores the life and work of the writer and artist, while the village museum centers on everyday objects and depictions of the Kuker tradition.

Pirostiya and Route Planning

Pirostiya is a Thracian sanctuary near Turia. Three upright stones form its base; a fourth lies across them, arranged in a way that resembles a tripod. The marked trail starts at the stone bridge on the edge of Turia and is about 1.5 kilometers one way. Before setting out, check the trail markers and the condition of the route on site.

Yarat: Erosional Landforms and Trail Conditions

Yarat is a protected site with earth pyramids of various shapes formed by erosion; some reach up to ten meters in height. The path along Yarat is not secured and can be dangerous. Check local conditions before visiting. The route information differs considerably: a marked trail leads to Pirostiya and is about 1.5 kilometers each way; the path along Yarat is not secured and can be dangerous.
