Accommodation in Kazanlak
If you’re looking for a hotel in Kazanlak, you can plan your stay around cultural interests: attractions range from Thracian heritage and regional and art museums to insights into domestic life, music, and crafts. For your planning, it’s worth arranging the stops according to your interests. That way, you can decide whether archaeological history, individual artists, or regional everyday culture should take center stage.
Thracian Heritage and Regional History
The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is located in Tyulbeto Park in Kazanlak. It is dated to around the end of the 4th century BC; its wall paintings depict Thracian burial rituals and culture. In 1979, the tomb was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its dating, subject matter, and World Heritage status each provide a distinct historical point of reference.
The Iskra Historical Museum was founded in 1901 by Petar Topuzov and is considered one of Bulgaria’s oldest, richest, and best-known regional museums. The Rose Museum is part of Iskra and is housed in a new building in Rozarium Park. It is considered unique of its kind. At the Rose Museum, you can buy rose oil, rose oil products, cosmetics, rose liqueur, and souvenirs related to rose culture. The museum’s theme thus connects with an insight into products associated with rose cultivation.
The “Kulata” Ethnographic Complex is located in Kazanlak’s oldest neighborhood. Buildings that preserve the traditional character of the neighborhood have been preserved there. The exhibition focuses on the domestic life and worldview of Kazanlak’s residents in the mid-19th century. Visitors can also watch rose-distillation demonstrations, test essential oils, and sample culinary products made with oil-bearing rose. Rose oil, rose liqueur, Gyul rakia, cosmetics, and handmade souvenirs are also available there. Kulata thus brings together everyday history, rose-related themes, and craft and culinary experiences.
Music, Painting, and Family History
The Petko Staynov House is located in Kazanlak at the composer’s birthplace. Its exhibition explores Petko Staynov’s life and his symphonic, choral, academic, public, and publishing work. Those interested in music history will find a different focus here than in exhibitions on regional everyday culture or Thracian heritage.
The Ahinora Museum has one hall with a permanent exhibition of Ivan Milev’s paintings and another hall for temporary exhibitions. The museum is considered the world’s first to be dedicated to a single painting. The two halls therefore have clearly distinct roles: one is devoted to Milev’s paintings, while the other is intended for temporary exhibitions.
The halls in Shipkoff House present episodes from the history of the Shipkoff family. The house also has a workshop for handmade souvenirs, where visitors can take part in the creative process and make their own souvenirs. The Museum of Photography and Contemporary Visual Arts opened in 2015. It is intended as a place for photographers, photography enthusiasts, residents, and visitors.
