Cherni Vit is a destination whose character brings together mountains, river landscapes and local history. Thanks to its nature, history, traditions and favourable climate, it is considered a year-round destination. Cherni Vit is also a starting point for alpine areas and mountain huts in the region. When planning your trip, you can explore its natural features, hiking trails and cultural and historical heritage.

River Landscapes and Mountainous Terrain

The Boatin Nature Reserve lies within the territory of Cherni Vit and encompasses the basin of the Cherni Vit River. The river flows through the village and through unspoilt beech forests. Scenic rapids and meadows are also among the landscape features associated with it. The varied mountain terrain ranges from 450 metres at Pelovoto to 2,033 metres at Kartal Peak. These elevations give a sense of the terrain’s range and complement the river and beech forests as distinct natural features.

Hiking Trails and Time Planning

The ecological hiking trail to Benkovska Cave starts at the Neyo Kracunov Monument. It is about one kilometre long, and the stated duration is 40 minutes. There is a fountain and a car park beside the monument at the starting point. The Benkovska Cave–Chertigrad ecological hiking trail is about four kilometres long, with a stated duration of two and a half hours. Based on the stated durations, the two time estimates differ by one hour and 50 minutes. This allows you to compare the trails in terms of the time they take. As trail conditions, signage and facilities at the starting point may change, check the latest information before your visit. The trails differ in length by around three kilometres.

History Along the Trails

The Chertigrad trail passes the remains of the ancient Thracian fortress of Chertigrad and offers panoramic views towards the Stara Planina. The historical associations of the two sites are distinct: Chertigrad is an ancient fortress, while Benkovska Cave is linked to the April Uprising of 1876 through the story of Georgi Benkovski and local resident Neyo Kracunov. In May 1876, Benkovski’s group was in the Cherni Vit area. A copy of flag No. 9 of Georgi Benkovski’s Flying Band is on display at the museum in Cherni Vit. A historical reenactment is held annually at the Neyo Kracunov Monument in late May; the exact date may vary.

Local Tradition

Tcherni Vit green cheese is made in Cherni Vit and the surrounding municipalities. The Tetevan is considered a rustic local sheep breed and is associated with the traditional production of the cheese. If local traditions are also a factor in choosing your destination, this cheese adds a culinary dimension to the nature and history on offer.
