The Arda River crosses Stambolovo Municipality in the northeastern part of the Eastern Rhodopes. Its proximity to the borders of Greece and Turkey is part of its geographical setting, as are the rugged, partly mountainous terrain, more than 80 small reservoirs and fertile land along the river. Water, mountain ridges and agriculture together shape the character of the landscape.

River Landscapes and Birdlife

Parts of the municipality lie within the Studen Kladenets, Most Arda and Eastern Rhodopes Natura 2000 sites. The Golemiat Sipey protected area and the Devil’s Bridge and Kovan Kaya natural monuments are also located within the municipality. A vulture feeding station near Stari Chal is important for the protection of Bulgaria’s three vulture species. It is used by the Eastern Rhodopes griffon vulture population and also attracts a higher concentration of Egyptian vultures. If you plan to visit, check local access conditions.

Routes from Tunkovo

Three routes starting at the Eco Center in Tunkovo differ in their destinations, length and duration. Route 1 leads to the Golemiat Sipey protected area. Over 19 kilometers, it combines deciduous forest, a souslik colony and birdwatching with a Thracian rock tomb near Svetoslav and old houses near Byal Kladenets. The route takes about five hours.

Route 2 runs from Tunkovo to the Vulchi Dol protected area. Its stops include the Thracian megalithic cromlech, two Thracian rock tombs near Potochnitsa and a birdwatching point next to the vulture feeding station near Stari Chal. At 24 kilometers and about six hours, it is the longest of the three routes described.

Route 3 also starts at the Eco Center, heads toward Madzharovo and follows improved roads through deciduous forests. It covers 17 kilometers and takes about five hours. The Eastern Rhodopes Nature Conservation Center and a birdwatching hide are along the route; the center and later sections are in the wider Madzharovo area. Routes 1 and 3 therefore take a similar amount of time but have different stops. Check local route conditions before setting out.

Thracian Sites and Regional Culture

Near Dolno Cherkovishte, the Kovan Kaya rock massif contains carved Thracian cultural niches and tombs. Groups of Thracian cultural monuments lie on the Chala ridge. Pop Martin’s Hole, a rock tomb, is also near Dolno Cherkovishte; its surroundings contain more than 200 trapezoidal niches. An ancient and medieval fortress stands on the nearby peak of St. Ilia. The municipality’s archaeological remains also include burial mounds, fortresses, rock tombs and sanctuaries, particularly from pre-Roman and Roman-Thracian times and the early Bulgarian period. Visitor facilities at some archaeological sites may be limited.

The Ethnographic Museum in Zhalti Bryag was founded in 1980 and presents the local culture and way of life of the Stambolovo area, Thrace and the Rhodopes. Its collections include traditional costumes, carpets, copperware, ceramics, weapons, woodcarving, jewelry, church objects and lace. Check the visiting arrangements locally before visiting the museum.

Wine and Local Experiences

Small wineries in the wider Stambolovo area offer tastings. The wines include Stambolovo Merlot and Cabernet Franc as well as the less common varieties Tamyanka and Kehlibar. Stambolovo Winery is in the village of Stambolovo, right next to the municipal building; check its visiting arrangements in advance.

At Bay Ivan’s country house in Tunkovo, tastings of locally produced wines are offered alongside local dishes. Confirm availability before your visit. Georgi Shishkov hosts groups of no more than ten people by prior arrangement. His offerings include vineyard walks, seasonal vine pruning or grape harvesting, local dishes and wine tastings. Arrange participation in advance as well.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

The municipal road network includes 47 kilometers of third-class roads and 86.40 kilometers of fourth-class roads. Private transport companies operate scheduled services to larger Bulgarian cities; schedules may change, so check current times before travelling. A local road reaches the turnoff at the Arda Bridge near Dolno Cherkovishte. When planning your stay, you can match the route distances and visits to the museum and wineries, which need to be arranged in advance, to your interests.
