Lyubimetz: Melons, Wine and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Lyubimetz
Watermelons and melons have made the municipality of Lyubimetz well known beyond the region. Winegrowing, Thracian cultural heritage and a range of nature experiences add further dimensions to the destination. When planning your trip, you can focus on its agricultural character, cultural offerings and the described hikes as separate themes.
Melon Growing and Wine Traditions
The town of Lyubimetz lies on the foothills of the Gora ridge, in a fertile landscape associated with watermelon growing. Grapes are also grown in the municipality; the soil and climate favor vineyards and winemaking. Melons and wine thus provide a fitting theme if you are interested in agriculture and regional food culture. The municipality’s tourism profile includes ecological, rural and wine-related themes, as well as cultural, festival and culinary tourism.
The municipality is part of Bulgaria’s Thrace tourist region. Its traditions are reflected, among other things, in local customs, rituals and holidays, as well as in the cultivation of winegrowing. Community centers share these traditions and events from the cultural calendar. In Lozen, the Amber Grape Folklore Festival is part of Bulgaria’s National Cultural Calendar and is considered one of the region’s most important cultural events. Festival dates and programs may change; if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest event information.
Culture and History in the Villages
The local intangible heritage includes prayers for rain and healing rituals, a ceremonial procession in the village of Malko Gradishte, and ritual visits to the Shindilikovo spring and Marian’s Stone. Access to ritual sites and the dates of public events may vary; check both before planning a specific visit. In Lozen, an ethnographic museum adds to this cultural picture: it displays around 250 objects relating to the village’s historic domestic life, clothing, crafts and agricultural traditions. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check before visiting the museum.
Another point of interest is Gluhite Kamani, one of the most significant Thracian sanctuaries in the Eastern Rhodopes. The site combines archaeological heritage with an approach through forest and rocky terrain. The municipality therefore offers different perspectives side by side: traditional customs, everyday village history and a significant sanctuary complex.
Hiking and Nature
To reach Gluhite Kamani, the route starts at a parking area, follows a forest road for about 20 minutes, and then continues along a trail through forest and rocky terrain. Along the way, you reach two viewpoints overlooking the Ivaylovgrad Reservoir. The route is marked and free of charge; sturdy footwear is required. There is no drinking water source along the way in warm weather, so you should bring water. Weather and maintenance can affect trail conditions: check the conditions before setting out.
Bee-eaters, short-toed snake eagles, hoopoes, leaf warblers, nightingales and blackbirds may be found in the forest around Gluhite Kamani. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.
Another option is a day hike, there and back, to the 703.6-meter summit on the Gora ridge. It starts and ends in Malko Gradishte. An optional detour to a Thracian tomb adds 1.5 kilometers to the return route. The hike is considered difficult, takes about seven hours, is 19.8 kilometers long and includes 557 meters of elevation gain. It is unmarked; autumn, winter and spring are considered suitable seasons. Check the weather and trail conditions before setting out.
Water, Transport and Trip Planning
The 33-kilometer-long Ivaylovgrad Reservoir is used for fishing and water sports. Regattas, fishing and rowing on the reservoir are also part of the municipality’s tourism profile.
Lyubimetz is connected to railway line No. 1 and Rail Corridor 10 on the Nish–Sofia–Plovdiv–Svilengrad–Istanbul route; the town has a railway station and related infrastructure. The international E-80 road and a railway connection also run through the municipality and the town; E-80 connects Western and Central Europe with Istanbul, the Middle East and Asia. Timetables may change, so it is worth checking them before departure.
When looking for a hotel in Lyubimetz, your trip’s focus can help guide your choice: a stay with rail access, cultural events and wine traditions, or more time for hiking. This lets you plan around the experiences that interest you.
