The Municipality of Karnobat in Burgas Province includes the town of Karnobat and several villages in the Karnobat Valley. The area is predominantly flat, with the valleys of the Mochuritsa and Rusokastrenska rivers shaping the terrain. Two ranges of relatively low hills rise in the north. Reservoirs and smaller water storage facilities on tributaries are used for irrigation, while farmland covers extensive areas around the municipality. River valleys, open spaces and hill ranges provide Karnobat with a variety of landscape features.

History and Markeli

The historic Karnobat area lies before the southern approaches to the Rishki and Varbishki passes. Archaeological evidence spans the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, the Iron Age and Antiquity, and the Middle Ages. Karnobat developed as a centre of trade and crafts; a well-known fair is part of this history and dates back to the 15th century. If you want the fair to influence your travel dates, check the latest dates and format in advance.

Markeli lies about 7.5 kilometres west of Karnobat. It was an important early Byzantine city and later a powerful fortress of the First Bulgarian Empire. Its location formed part of the historic Constantinople–Adrianople–Pliska axis. Markeli offers a tangible point of reference for the region’s history, while the archaeological evidence around Karnobat spans a much longer sequence of periods.

Museums and Regional Culture

The Atanas Karayivanov Historical Museum has five departments: Archaeology, Ethnography, Art, Nature and History. Check the museum’s current organisation and exhibition displays before your visit. The Nature Department focuses on rare, endangered and protected bird species, including the corn crake, ferruginous duck, pygmy cormorant and red-breasted goose, as well as mammals typical of the area.

The ethnographic exhibition presents local groups such as the Zagortsi, Glavantsi, Kotlentsi and Zagartsi, as well as settlers from the Chirpan area. Zagor women’s dress is distinguished by striking, tall headdresses. Embroidered textiles, pom-pom decorations, appliqué and figurative ornaments complete the picture. The collection at the Dimitar Polyanov House Museum includes manuscripts, drawings, documents, photographs, books, personal belongings and family objects, as well as materials about cultural figures from Karnobat.

Nature is also part of what visitors can discover in the municipality: the protected Lalikoto natural area in the district of Venets preserves a population of Urumov’s tulip. A centuries-old tree in Mudrino is also protected. If you are planning a nature-focused visit, check the latest conservation guidance.

Viticulture and Local Rakia

Viticulture and the production of wine and rakia have been part of the history and local livelihoods in the Karnobat area for centuries. One distinctive product is Karnobatska Grozdova grape rakia: it is made from Pamid, Rkatsiteli, Dimyat and Uni Blanc grapes and aged for six months in selected Strandzha oak barrels. Check current availability and the recipe before purchasing.

According to Vinprom Karnobat, its company-owned vineyards cover more than 20,000 decares. The range of grape varieties includes Tamyanka, Dimyat, Rubin, Mavrud, Misket, Pamid, Uni Blanc and Rkatsiteli, as well as international varieties. Information about the area and range of varieties may change. The wine tradition can thus be explored through both a specific rakia and the broader context of company-operated vineyards.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The municipality is located on the Burgas–Sofia first-class road. The Karnobat–Shumen–Ruse road connects it towards Varna and its port complex. Karnobat railway station is considered the country’s fourth-largest railway junction; its facilities include infrastructure for freight traffic and for railway cars and locomotives. For your travel plans, check current passenger services and timetables at the station, as well as traffic and roadworks on the roads.

This makes it easy to distinguish between different travel interests: river valleys and protected natural areas sit alongside museums, archaeological history and wine traditions. Which of these aspects matters most to you depends on the themes you want to focus on during your stay.
