Discover Burgas
Accommodation in Burgas
Burgas lies at the westernmost point of Burgas Bay and is surrounded by three lakes: Atanasovsko, Burgas Lake (Vaya) and Mandrensko. This destination brings the coast, bodies of water and a wide range of themes together for your days there.
Bird Migration and the Poda Nature Conservation Centre
The Via Pontica, one of Europe’s largest bird migration routes, passes above the Poda protected area. Every year, tens of thousands of white storks, Dalmatian pelicans, birds of prey and songbirds pass through. The Poda Nature Conservation Centre is open year-round, with a permanent exhibition dedicated to the area’s and region’s biodiversity. Binoculars and spotting scopes, observation terraces on two levels and interactive outdoor modules round out what it offers. Ornithologists lead themed talks. If you would like to attend a particular talk or use the equipment, check its current availability in advance.
Poda therefore offers different ways to explore nature: the exhibition presents the region’s diversity, while the terraces and optical equipment are designed for observation. The talks add a specialist-led perspective on specific topics. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on the exhibition, observation or a talk, rather than treating all the offerings as the same activity.
City History at the Ethnographic Museum
Burgas’s Ethnographic Museum is housed in the Brakalov House. Built in 1873, it is considered the only surviving 19th-century Bulgarian town house of the “Balkan House” type in Burgas. The museum focuses on traditional culture and everyday life in old Burgas. A visit thus combines a glimpse of historic city life with the building in which the collection is presented. If you are interested in local culture, this focus offers a different way to explore the city than Poda’s nature themes.
Burgas Central Railway Station is also part of the city’s history: it was declared a cultural monument in the 1970s. The South Bus Station is right next to it. Bus routes from there serve all destinations along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, as well as Varna and Burgas Airport. The two neighbouring stations make it easy to orient yourself when planning journeys by bus and train. Check the current timetable before travelling for specific departure times.
Beach and Experiences
Burgas Central Beach stretches for almost two kilometres along a golden sandy coastline and offers opportunities for swimming and sunbathing. Areas for volleyball, football and beach tennis add sporting activities to the beach experience. The sports facilities may be subject to seasonal maintenance; check their condition before your visit. Beach conditions and seasonal services can also vary, so bear this in mind when planning a beach day.
Another distinct place to visit is the Burgas Aviation Museum at the entrance to Burgas Airport. There, visitors can put on virtual reality headsets, take on the role of a pilot and fly an aircraft of their choice. If this experience is important to your plans, check whether the equipment is currently available before your visit.
You can give different themes different emphasis during your trip: Poda is about birdlife and biodiversity, the Ethnographic Museum about culture and everyday life, and Central Beach about swimming, sunbathing and sports. The railway station and bus station also provide practical orientation for journeys from Burgas.
