There are many ways to explore Zedelgem: on foot through forests, heathland and farmland; by bike, taking in views and historic sights; or by discovering its architectural and milling history. When choosing a hotel in Zedelgem, it is helpful to start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to hike, choose a cycling route or make individual cultural sites the centre of your visit? The different routes and themes provide a practical framework for planning your excursions.

Hiking through forests, heathland and open countryside

The 11.5 km Klytepad trail passes through Zedelgem’s rural landscape of farmhouses, fields, pastures, ditches and streams. The Heirwegpad is 8.5 km long and passes through Vloethemveldbos. The trails therefore differ in length and each offers a distinct perspective on the landscape. The Sint-Elooipad passes through the Merkemveld nature and green area. Another walking route starts in Zedelgem and runs through Merkemveldbos and the Doeveren nature and green area.

In Doeveren, Galloway cattle roam freely in a landscape of heathland and semi-open forest. Vloethemveld, in turn, features forests, heathland, nutrient-poor grasslands and nutrient-poor water. The 365-hectare nature area extends across Zedelgem and Jabbeke. The onthaalgebouw Kamphuis has a permanent exhibition on the history of Vloethemveld, the care of nature and heritage, and recreational opportunities in and around the area. This offers different ways to explore both the landscape and its history.

For walks in Vloethemveld, the Vloethemveld Heritage App offers two circular routes of 4 or 11 km. Along the way, short explanations about sights in the publicly accessible part of the area appear on your smartphone. The two distances offer a clear choice between a shorter and a longer circuit, while the explanations provide information about the sights along the walk. The Den Doorn site also has an approximately 2,500 m² off-leash dog area with benches.

Cycling with views and stories

The Zedelgemse Zichtenroute is a 34 km audio cycling route featuring 15 authentic views of Groot-Zedelgem. On the approximately 17 km Theaterfietsroute Loppem, you can bring eleven scenes to life by scanning the QR codes on the wooden posts. The Boschvogelroute offers a different perspective: cycling along it lets you explore the landscapes and numerous historical sights of Zedelgem’s four sub-municipalities.

If route length is an initial criterion for planning your cycling trip, comparing the Zichtenroute with the Theaterfietsroute offers a practical guide: 34 km compared with approximately 17 km. The Boschvogelroute, by contrast, focuses on the landscapes and historical sights in the four sub-municipalities. The routes therefore differ both in length and in whether the focus is on audio, QR-code scenes or a broader range of themes.

Architecture, milling history and cultural heritage

The Sint-Laurentiuskerk in Zedelgem is a protected monument. Its furnishings include a Romanesque baptismal font dating from the second half of the 12th century. The Plaetsemolen offers another perspective on cultural heritage, with its industrial history: it was a grain windmill of the post mill type, built in 1866. During the interwar period, it was converted into a mechanical mill and powered by a rare horizontal single-cylinder diesel engine made by Claeys-Zedelgem. The Plaetsemolen mill ruins are also a protected monument.

Kasteel van Loppem was built between 1858 and 1863. Its architecture and interiors have been preserved in their original state. The castle also contains the room where King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth stayed in 1918. Doolhof Loppem offers a different point of interest: designed in 1873, it has a total of 1.5 kilometres of paths between green and red hornbeam hedges, leading to a central tree.

The range of sights extends from a Romanesque baptismal font and the technical history of a mill to castle architecture and a hedge maze. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Zedelgem, you can match these different interests to your own preferences and the time you plan to spend hiking or cycling.
