Explore Loppem through a range of different highlights: castle architecture and art, the history of the maze, trails in the castle park and nature watching. For your stay, you can focus on architectural history, landscape or specific activities. Activities for children are also among the possible themes.

Loppem Castle: Architecture, Art and History

Loppem Castle is a neo-Gothic Gesamtkunstwerk, or integrated work of art, built between 1858 and 1863. The term Gesamtkunstwerk draws attention to the design of the castle as a coherent whole. If you are interested in architecture, the construction period offers a specific historical timeframe.

The castle houses an art collection featuring objects from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. Its time span therefore extends far beyond the construction phase of 1858 to 1863. This offers two different perspectives: the building’s history puts the structure in context, while the collection spans many eras.

Towards the end of the First World War, King Albert I stayed at Loppem Castle; the Loppem government was formed there. This historical episode is set well apart in time from the 19th-century construction history and adds a political dimension.

Comparing Neo-Gothic Architecture

Sint-Martinuskerk Loppem offers a different way to explore Neo-Gothic design: its preserved interior is entirely Neo-Gothic. At the castle, the focus is on the Neo-Gothic Gesamtkunstwerk; at the church, it is on the preserved interior. These are two distinct architectural highlights to choose between.

Landscape and Nature Watching

The Kasteeldomein van Loppem comprises a varied landscape of wet and dry forests, park woodland, wooded pastures, and fertilised and unfertilised grasslands. Alongside the history of the buildings and collection, the variety of landscape types emerges as a highlight in its own right.

You can watch birds at the Watermolenvijver. A walk takes you through the romantic park at Loppem Castle. For nature lovers, these are two different activities: watching birds by the water or walking through the park.

Trails and Practical Information

There are three marked circular trails in Loppem Castle Park, ranging from 1.5 to 3 kilometres in length. The longest loop is therefore twice as many kilometres as the shortest. The distances can help you match your preferred route length to your day’s plans.

The “Wandelen door de kasteelgeschiedenis” podwalk is permanently available and starts at the car park. Check its availability with the provider before travelling. The Sportcentrum Loppem/Strooien Hane bus stop is about a two-minute walk from the maze; the safest route is along the park path. Public transport details may change, so check the connection before you travel.

The Theaterfietsroute Loppem starts at Sint-Martinuskerk in Loppem. As the route may change during revisions, check the starting point before setting off.

Activities for Children

“De Doolhofmol” is an educational game for children aged 6 to 9. You can have a picnic at the De Pierlapont nature playground, where children can play. The activities differ in age range and type: De Doolhofmol is intended for the age group specified, while De Pierlapont offers the opportunity to play and picnic.
