Lustenau combines historic cycling routes, hiking trails in the Rhine Valley, museums, market life and nature on the Old Rhine. If you are looking for a hotel in Lustenau, these different highlights can help you tailor your stay to your own interests.

Cycling history and routes along the Rhine

The Lustenau Historic Cycling Loop covers various aspects of Lustenau’s history at 13 stops. There is also an interactive virtual version with audio. You can explore the historic theme through the stops or, additionally, in digital form.

Another cycling route is the “Across the Border” audio cycling trail: it follows the Rhine Valley cycle route via Bregenz and Hard and along the Rhine embankment to Lustenau. The former construction railway of the International Rhine Regulation also offers trips into the landscape around Lake Constance.

Hikes and navigation

There are more than 60 kilometres of marked hiking trails in and around Lustenau. The hiking trails on the flat valley floor of the Rhine Valley in and around Lustenau are marked in yellow and white and classified as “easy to walk”. Lustenau’s hiking trail network has more than 226 signposts at 93 locations.

The accessible Lustenau–Schmitter hike is one specific circular route. It starts and ends near the Austrian-Swiss border, follows the Diepoldsau bank of the Old Rhine to Schmitter Bridge, and returns along the Lustenau riverbank path. The loop is 4.5 kilometres long. A section of the Lustenau riverbank path invites you to linger and watch waterbirds; there are also rest areas and information boards with nature-related details. Check the current condition of these facilities before your visit.

Museums and market

The Stickerei – Museum. Archiv. Kommunikation (S-MAK) presents various aspects of embroidery. It is open Thursday to Sunday, from 2 to 6 pm. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit.

The Rhein-Schauen Museum presents the history of the Rhine, including its floods and inundations, as well as culture, technology and nature on the Rhine and in the Alpine Rhine Valley. The former construction railway of the International Rhine Regulation also provides access to the landscape around Lake Constance.

From March to December, Kirchplatz becomes the marketplace for the Luschnouar Market every Thursday and Saturday morning. Numerous market vendors offer food and other products, and advise customers on the best ways to prepare their food. As the market follows a seasonal schedule, check the current market days before visiting.

Nature on the Old Rhine

The Am Moosbach Nature Play Park covers almost 2,000 square metres and is the largest playground in the northern part of the municipality of Lustenau. A stream supplied with drinking water is modelled on the neighbouring Moosbach, considered Lustenau’s last naturally meandering ditch. The park is located along a walking and cycling path.

The Old Rhine recreational area near Lustenau offers alluvial forests, walking paths and natural bathing spots. Alongside the marked hiking trails, it provides a landscape with walking opportunities and bathing spots as a distinct option. If you plan to visit a natural bathing spot, check its current condition before your visit.
